These two ladies were in the news recently, but it wasn't for anything they said. It's for something they wore.

Look closely at the lady on the right in the purple tee shirt. Although you can only see part of it, what does her shirt say? Here's a better view:

So, what is XX-XY Athletics? It is a men's and women's clothing company, supporting fairness in women's sports. This is from their website:

Women deserve the opportunities that sports and single sex spaces provide. Sex matters. It is the single biggest determinant of athletic performance. It is unfair and dangerous to allow males (XY) to compete in girls and women’s (XX) sports.

For women to compete safely and fairly, women’s sports need to remain female. We’ll be here defending truth. And women and girls. Until that happens.

Amen to that!

You can read more about what happened that night at the XX-XY website, but basically they were told to either cover up their shirts or leave the arena.

So, what does the Bible say about such things? You already know that.

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1:27

"He created them male and female and blessed them." - Genesis 5:2

Yeah, that's Old Testament. What does Jesus have to say about it?

“Haven’t you read,” He (Jesus) replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female." - Matthew 19:4

This all makes perfectly good sense, unless you're a supporter of the trans movement. In which case, nothing can be said to convince you otherwise. And why is that? Of course, the answer is in the Bible.

"God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. ²⁵They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise!f Amen.

²⁶For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. ²⁷Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

²⁸Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. ²⁹They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, ³⁰slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents. ³¹They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless.

³²Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things are worthy of death, they not only continue to do these things, but also approve of those who practice them." - Romans 1:24-32

Lots of Trouble

There is a lesson that 'lots' of people ignore in today's world. It's found in the Book of Genesis. It's the story of Lot. Here's the background.

Lot and Abraham had parted company back in Genesis 13. Lot chose to go down to the plain of the Jordan.

"So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east." - Genesis 13:11

"Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom." - Genesis 23:12

Uh-oh. In chapter 19 we read about some men of the town coming to Lot's house and wanting to have sex with some visiting angels. Then Lots said this:

“No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing." - Genesis 19:6

"My friends . . ."

"What does light have to do with darkness?" - 2 Corinthians 6:14

"Have nothing to do with such people." - 2 Timothy 3:5

Yet Lot called them his friends.

In today's world we have similar types of people to those in Lot's day. We humans haven't gotten much better at being hoky. As Paul said in his letter to the Roman church, "They are inventers of evil." - Romans 1:30

"But maybe I could lead them to Jesus," we say. "So we should be friends."

Umm, no. Have nothing to do with such people, Timothy!

We can pray for them and love them, as we SHOULD be doing. But should we befriend them? Hang out with them? And interact with them in their activities? Participate in their parades and events?  Not according to the Apostle Paul.

God wants us to be holy. Set apart.

"Be holy for I am holy." - Leviticus 11:45, 1 Peter 1:16

The concept of “holy” is deeply woven into the fabric of Scripture. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word often translated as “holy” is “qodesh,” which carries the idea of being set apart, consecrated, or sanctified for sacred use. In the New Testament, the Greek word “hagios” bears a similar meaning and underscores the moral and spiritual purity associated with holiness. The idea is that what God calls holy must be distinct in purpose and dedicated to His honor.

When we ask, “What defines being holy?” we are essentially exploring how individuals, communities, and even objects or spaces are designated as set apart under God’s purpose. This designation reflects not only a moral standard but also a transformative relationship with the God who is entirely separate from sin and imperfection. - BibleHub

And the picture? Then president Biden signing a bill into law, protecting gay marriage rights in 2022.

"Be holy, for I am holy." - God

He Was Pleased?

There are many different translations of the Bible's ancient manuscripts. This can sometimes cause confusion. Here is one such example from the Book of Isaiah.

"Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand." - Isaiah 53:10, NIV

Here's the same verse in the New King James Version:

"Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand." - Isaiah 53:10, NKJV

I can understand it being God's will to "crush" Jesus for our sins (NIV). He is a just judge. But honestly, I struggle with the NKJV, saying it PLEASED God to do it.

Also, "crushed" vs. "bruised." Would you rather be crushed or bruised? Personally, I'd choose to be bruised rather than crushed, but that's just me.

Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death." That sounds more like "crushing" than "bruising."

Anyway . . . why would it PLEASE God to kill His only begotten Son? I have no idea.

One thing to consider is that Jesus is part of the Trinity. Jesus IS God. Jesus is LORD and LORD is the name used in the text, so really Jesus pleased Himself.

Look, God loves His children. He loves Israel and all of the Gentile believers who have been "grafted in." Yet every one of us is a sinner, doomed to destruction witbout Jesus and His sacrifice. Here's a thought.

What if Jesus, who assumed human form, lived a perfect life, offered Himself as a spotless sacrifice for all of mankind. Do you suppose THAT would please God the Father? Jesus sacrificing Himself so that we could live?

We, God's creation, would then receive eternal life and could commune with God, just like Adam did at the very beginning.

"And they heard the sound of the LORD God, walking in the garden in the cool of the day." - Genesis 3:8

And could "bruising" Jesus, rather than crushing Him, be equated with a temporary death? Because a "bruise" heals, and Jesus was resurrected. 🤔

Or, perhaps it's because that, after thousands of years, God's plan of redemption was finally revealed to His children, in Christ on the cross. I could see where that could be pleasing.

I'm no biblical scholar. Maybe there's a perfect explanation for these differing translations. But I DO know this: God is perfect, His plan is perfect, and it doesn't really matter what we think. All things happen according  to His will. And I'm okay that.

Really Moses?

"The Lord was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance." - Deuteronomy 4:21

Really Moses? Was God really angry with you because of the Israelites? Let's turn back to Numbers 20 and take a closer look.

"Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. ³They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord! ⁴Why did you bring the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? ⁵Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”

⁶Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. ⁷The Lord said to Moses, ⁸“Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” - Numbers 20:2-8

God said, "SPEAK to that rock." What did Moses do? Let's keep reading.

"So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. ¹⁰He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” ¹¹Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank." - Numbers 20:9-11

Moses didn't get to enter the Promised Land because of his OWN disobedience. Yes, Moses was angry with the Israelites, and the were a stiff necked people, but they didn't keep Moses from crossing the Jordan. His sin did.

When we examine our own lives, can we find things that might keep us from enjoying God's blessings? What about the infertile woman? The Bible says that he closes and opens rhe womb. Upon occasion, God allows Satan to cause us problems. All for His ultimate glory and our good.

Sin is a bigger problem in our lives than most of us are willing to acknowledge. Our next step should be repentance, and let Hod take it from there.

Is there something in our lives that needs to change in God's eyes? Do we need to eliminate certain foods and drinks to live a healthier, happier life? Perhaps it's a relationship that needs to end.

We should be constantly examining ourselves, searching for ways to become more holy. That's a very basic command from God.

"Be holy, for I am holy." - Leviticus 11:44, 45, 19:2, 20:26, 1 Peter 1:15

What To Say

"Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. ¹¹There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

“¹²But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. ¹³And so you will bear testimony to me. ¹⁴But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. ¹⁵For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict." - Luke 21:10-15

Why is my heart troubled these days? Why am I downcast? I feel like David right now. Why?

"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? 

Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. 

My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you." - Psalm 42:5-6

Well, I am remembering God right now. I am remembering how Jesus told His disciples not to worry about what they should say because Jesus would give them words to say.

In all of my "what if's" and "shoulda said's," I must remember what David said. I must "put my hope in God" and "praise Him."

I become troubled when I remember all of my friends and family members who don't know Jesus. It saddens me because I know what awaits them. I don't want to see that happen to them, or anyone. I love them!

These are the words that I would say:

I believe in God, and I also believe He is perfect. "In Him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5)

God demands perfection from all of us (absolutely no sin allowed in heaven).

Our problem is that none of us is sinless. As Peter said to Jesus, "Who then can be saved?" (Luke 18:26) The answer is that no one can be saved, apart from God's grace.

The Bible says that, "without blood, there is no remition of sin" (Hebrews 9:22). There has to be a sacrifice.

Enter Jesus. He led a sinless life while here on earth. And He died for OUR sins. A spotless, sinless lamb, sacrificed for OUR sins.

This is where God hits it out of the park - John 3:16. 

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

That's it. We have to repent of our sins and believe in Him. And that's the snag for many, including many whom we love. They're too busy, or the lifestyle they have chosen is more important to them. It's frustrating. Our hearts break. I keep hearing the words of Isaiah in my head. "Here I am Lord. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8).

But really, the only solution is prayer. We cannot change people's hearts. That's the Holy Spirit's job. The Holy Spirit draws people to God. And that is what we should pray for. And we should "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Instead of feeling bad about this situation, I need to be praying about it! Won't you please join me?

The Words I Would Say - Sidewalk Prophets

Elusive Love?

This story is for those who desire to find love yet somehow it eludes them. It is for those who THOUGHT they were in love, only to find themselves shipwrecked on some remote desert island. Your story can have a happy ending, if you so desire. Interested?

Let's start with the concept of love itself. Where does love come from? How and where do we find it? So many questions! Let's begin with a Bible verse, shall we?

"So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him." - 1 John 4:16

Store that away for a moment and consider this: God created all things. He also created man in His own image. Do you then suppose that man is capable of showing love to others?

Yes, we CAN love, but then why don't we? Why are there some people who hate? Including ourselves. That's because of sin. God WANTS us to love one another.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." - John 13:34

All the pieces seem to be there, so why are we not finding love? Again, it's sin - in us, and in others. But the biggest component is the Holy Spirit. Are we SURE we have the Holy Spirit; or do we THINK we do. That's a real question we all must answer.

"It takes two to tango," so we need to make sure that both parties in our love relationships are saved (ie. a follower of Jesus). And yes, that's plural. We are to love everyone.

To be clear, 'love' has many different meanings. We are talking about unconditional, sacrificial love here. Agape in the Greek.

If we still haven't found love at this point, the last two components in our search for love are prayer and patience. Earnest, honest, vulnerable prayer. And a patience for as long as it takes.

We might say, "But I want love now!" Look at that statement. "I want." What about what "God wants?" And "now" sounds like impatience. Selfishness and impatience are sins.

It comes down to our faith in God. Our faith in Jesus. Is it real? Or just superficial? Are we SURE we know Him, or do we just know about Him?

Have You Been Sealed?

The Tribulum

One of the many things I love about the church I attend is our pastor's teaching. He dives deeper into the text than most pastors I've heard. This past Sunday we were just beginning Romans 5, when he paused after reading this verse: 

"And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance..." - Romans 5:3

Then he said something like this: "Tribulation comes from the Latin word tribulum or tribula. A tribulum was used for treshing out the grain."

Really? That's interesting. During the tribulations we go through in our lives, WE are the grain. Here's another verse dealing with threshing grain.

"His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” - Matthew 3:13

We are the wheat, unbelievers are the chaff, the barn is heaven, the threshing floor is earth, and the winnowing fork is Jesus at The Judgement.

I'm thinking that being "wheat" is better than being "chaff." Being burned up "with unquenchable fire" just does not appeal to me.

The picture above is what rhe underside of a tribulum looks like. The white things are jagged rocks embedded in the wooden planks. Imagine getting THAT dragged over you until your skin comes off. TRIBULATION!!

The tribulations that we face today pale in comparison to those of Jesus' day. Crucifixions, 39 lashes, or being burned alive. Yet, burning for all eternity is what awaits those who sin (all of us) and have not repented of those sins and made Jesus their Lord. By making Jesus LORD, then He becomes our SAVIOR. And we ALL need one of those.

And boy, do we all need Jesus!

Virus

Have you ever had a virus on your computer? They're nasty things. We recently discovered one on our laptop. It's still there.

At first, we thought all of our files had been deleted - pictures, music, documents, etc. When you think you've lost everything, it's an incredibly sinking feeling. But then . . .

My wife took our computer to our son - the usual path for tech-illiterate parents. Have a kid do it! He found all of our files, but we still had a virus.

We ended up getting a new computer on Cyber Monday. Saved $299! Let me tell you something. Opening up that new computer was an amazing feeling! Everything was clean and fresh. And there were no viruses! I felt whole again! Restored!!

(You already know where this story is going . . . Lol!) Jesus!

If you have repented of your sins and turned to Jesus for forgiveness and restoration, you already know how it feels to be "virus-free." Yet many people still choose to live a life filled with sin. Sin is just like a computer virus for the soul.

Thankfully, there IS anti-virus software that we can get for our computers. However, the subscription ran out for our computer, and I didn't renew it.

When our "subscription" runs out in this life were are living, DO NOT be found without Jesus in your heart. You will experience an eternity infected with a "virus" without any hope of a cure.

After King David committed adultery with Bathsheba, he prayed this prayer. It's worthy to remember it. Especially when we are convicted of our sins.

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

²Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

³For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

⁴Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

⁵Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

⁶Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

⁷Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

⁸Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

⁹Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

¹⁰Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

¹¹Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

¹²Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

¹³Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.

¹⁴Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

¹⁵Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.

¹⁶You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

¹⁷My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart." - Psalm 51:1-17

Thank you God for providing a way, Yahweh, to pay for OUR sins through His sacrifice on the cross. Thank you Jesus for hanging on that cross, in my place. And thank you Holy Spirit for convicting us of our sins and for drawing us near. No amount of thank yous would ever be enough for all you have done, and have yet to do. Amen.

The Undiscerning

We Christians go to church and believe in Jesus so therefore we should be a shoo-in for getting into heaven, right? Today we will read a verse that may cause us to reconsider what we say and do. It might also challenge our very belief system. Are you ready?

The Apostle Paul laid out a very clear path that members of the church in Rome could take to salvation (ie. The Romans Road).

In the last part of Romans 1, Paul lists a bunch of sins that are detestable to God. But then, in the very last verse, Paul offers up something else for us to consider.

"Though they (Roman church members) know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them." - Romans 1:32

Paul is writing to a church! Some people in the church in Rome were approving of the sinful acts that a portion of its members were committing!

Romans 1, Galatians 5, and Leviticus 18 clearly state that same sex sin is abomination to The Lord. Remember, these are people IN the church that Paul is writing about. For example, based on Romans 1:32, a lesbian pastor or bishop would REALLY be on God's naughty list. Instead of prayer meetings, are we holding gossip sessions?

The text also makes it sound like any church members who allow these things to go on in their churches also face the same wrath.

And what happens to an entire denomination under church leadership that practices or condones these things? This seems like a rather big deal. Will millions of members in these churches face God's wrath instead of heaven by approving / allowing sin? It kind of sounds like it.

There is a word that we Christians need to become very familiar with - "discerning." We must discern ALL things that come into our eyes, ears, heart, and mind. The undiscerning face an eternity FAR different than what they are expecting.

We need to be filtering everything we take into our Spirit-filled bodies through the Word of God. If it doesn't line up with scripture, discard it. Paul is a New Testament teacher. Wake up church!

When Jesus spoke to the woman caught in adultery, what did he tell her to do? "Go and sin no more." - John 8:11

We must first examine ourselves and then come alongside those we see living contrary to what the Bible says, and then lovingly point out these things. God wishes that none would perish.

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." - 2 Peter 3:9

Consumption

Have you ever heard the phrase, "You are what you eat"? It's supposed to apply to our bad eating habits. For example, if all you eat are Twinkies, you will eventually become one. Not really, but you know what I mean. The point of the phrase is, if you want to be healthy, eat healthy things.

This phrase extends WAY beyond our diet though. Our phones are a perfect example of this. We can spend a WHOLE lot of time on those things. I am guilty of that. If we really think about it, are we not merely entertaining ourselves because we're bored?

Another "branch" in this Y.A.W.Y.E. character study is the music we listen to. I have written here before about songs that fill the head throughout the day (and night). What we consume tends to fill us.

Our belief in Jesus is the same.

"I am the bread of life." - John 6:48

Jesus then went on to say that we must "consume" HIM.

"Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. ⁵⁴Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. ⁵⁵For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. ⁵⁶Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them." - John 6:53-56

Jesus is telling us to CONSUME who He is. To copy Him. This practice is carried out during communion in our churches.

"And He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” ²⁰And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood." - Luke 22:19-20

Paul later confirmed this, using a phrase attributed to Epimenides of Crete while speaking in the Areopagus in Athens.

"In him we live and move and have our being." - Acts 17:28

We are what we eat. We become what we consume. May I suggest that we put down our phones and pick up our Bibles? Let us consume God's word. Live it. Move in it. And let us become who God wants us to be - His.

What consumes YOU?

Self Betrayal

"The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, ²⁴and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” ²⁵In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” ²⁶For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes." - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

That's the typical passage of scripture that churches us when they take communion. But the last time our church did this, our pastor pointed out something interesting. Verse 23 above says "on the night he was betrayed." One of the men Jesus was praying with and breaking bread with that night, had betrayed him, and the other 11 would deny they even knew him before the day was done.

Our pastor encouraged us to pray for those who have betrayed us. Question: Has anyone ever betrayed you? I'm sure there are a few for everyone.

I began to make my mental list of the betrayers in MY life, but then I stopped and thought, "What about me? Haven't I also betrayed God through my sin? Haven't I betrayed myself?"

Ooo. Ouch. That was pretty humbling, and that was just how I prayed. A different kind of prayer comes out when you think of yourself as a type of Judas.

Does God look at us as "a Judas?" "A blasphemer?" Yes, He would - without the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. I personally am SO grateful for Jesus and what He did! We ALL should be.

"We ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23

"We ALL sin," the Bible says.

Quite rightly, those following Jesus once asked Him, "Who then can be saved?"

"Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”- Luke 18:26-27

The world tells us to "forgive ourselves" for the sins we have committed. According to verse 7 that we just read, that is impossible. Maybe it is IN OUR OWN EYES but not in God's. However, God HAS provided a way for us to be totally forgiven. His Son, Jesus.

If one scrolls back up and reads that opening passage again, it kind of makes us want to eat some bread and drink some wine, and pray, as we remember what Jesus did for us.

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." - Psalm 103:12

FoTS - Self-Control

Well, here we are at the last Fruit of The Spirit listed in Galatians 5 - Self-Control. I hope you have enjoyed these brief Bible Studies as much I have enjoyed writing them. Self-Control is something we all could use more of, especially these days.

Here's a perfect example of self-control - blood sugar. When we eat too many carbs our blood sugar goes up. So does our weight. That's not good. But those carbs are SO good tasting! And there's the battle. Self-control is needed when we become tempted by those doughnuts and muffins.

But there is another kind of self control we need to keep in mind, beyond what tempts us in the bakery aisle at the local convenience store. Satan's temptations. He absolutely loves to tempt us away from following God.

Temptation is the cause of many a sin. We need spiritual self-control. Here's an example from our Lord, Jesus.

Jesus was tempted three times in the dessert by Satan. Each time Jesus refused and even rebuked Satan with scripture.

Adam and Eve are another example. A little more self-control on both of their parts and we wouldn't be in this mess we're in today.

We need spiritual self-control, and God's Holy Spirit provides it.

"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13

That "way" is the Holy Spirit. And that's the real question regarding the fruits of Spirit. Is the Holy Spirit living in you?

Questions:

1. What is the biggest temptation facing you right now?
2. In what ways can you exhibit self-control?
3. The family is over and talking about Aunt Susan's drinking problem. What do YOU do?
4. James tells us that God will never tempt us (James 1:13) but He WILL test us (James 1:3). Is that test (temptation) something we can pass (self-control)?
5. When no one else was around, what is something you did that you wish you didn't?

Post-Op

God has blessed me with many friends in this life. I met with several of them this past week, two are recovering from recent surgeries. Both were more energetic than they were before their operations. Both were free from their previous ailments. Their smiles were bigger and their eyes were brighter.

Obviously, my friends were both glad they had made the decisions they did. Both were feeling far better than they had in the past. That got me thinking . . .

"And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” ¹⁷And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” - Mark 12:16-17

Jesus, the great physician, spent a lot of time ministering to those who needed to hear His healing words. There are numerous examples of His physical healings in the Bible too, but they were just a fortaste of what Jesus REALLY was interested in - their SPIRITUAL healing.

"All I know is, I was blind and now I see," said the man born blind. He was speaking of his physical healing. But he is also an example of spiritual healing saying, "Lord, I believe," and he worshipped Jesus (John 9). We are all "blind" . . . until we meet Jesus.

I love ALL of my friends. And what do friends do? Do you remember the paralytic man whose friends tore a hole in the roof and lowered him down to Jesus? What did Jesus do? He forgave the man's sins. That was his primary need. THEN Jesus healed the physical.

"And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven." - Luke 5:20

Do you have someone in your life who is in need of spiritual healing? These days, it seems, there is an endless supply. Love someone enough today to tell them about the spiritual healing power of Jesus. He can absolutely change their lives. And their future eternity.

The Meg

My wife and I watched The Meg a year or so ago. That was enough for us. It was pretty lame, almost laughable at times. But one scene caught my attention.

The scientific cruise ship had just been capsized by the giant shark. The entire crew went flying into the ocean. Some of them landing a hundred feet or so from the ship. Yeah, right.

Anyway, two of these distant crew members (a man and a woman) conveniently landed right next to each other. And here comes the shark! Er, excuse me . . . The Meg! (Short for megalodon).

At the 3:45 mark of the clip below we see that man and woman in water quite some distance from the boat. And a shark in the distance. But not for long.

"Jaxx. You're gonna make it. You're a good person. Don't look back."

The guy starts beating the water to draw the shark to himself. He's sacrificing his own life so that the woman could live.

The woman makes it back to the boat safely but she is in tears, thinking about what her friend had done for her.

Several things . . .

Yes, this man sacrificed his life to save someone else, but I'm not going to compare what HE did to Jesus' sacrifice for OUR sins. WAY different.

He told the woman that she was a good person. Wrong. That's not what Jesus says.

"No one is good except God alone." - Mark 10:18

But the thing that struck me the most was the womans tears. She wept at what had been done for her. My question is this:

Did WE weep when we learned that Jesus died for us? I'm guessing no. I didn't.

My next question is "Why not?"

Difficult to answer. Everyone's different, but we never walked with Jesus personally. We didn't interact with Him on a daily basis.

I think the disciples probably wept at His death, but I'm just guessing. His mother and Mary Magdalene probably wept as well.

I don't know about you, but I feel incredibly unworthy right now. His sacrifice . . . our Savior and our God . . . on a cross. And I didn't shed a tear? I need to learn to weep. David did.

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame." - Psalm 22:1-5

I have been struggling with something for quite a while now. I'd call it a frustration but it's really more than that. It's a deep sadness, as well as that feeling of being frustrated.

It has to do with "the world" in which we live. For example, the evening "news." But I have pretty much given up on that. Social media is another source of frustration and sadness. So, I try to keep my interaction on that platform to a minimum as well. Apparently, King David had similar feelings.

"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? - psalm 43:5

Amen, my brother! Why, indeed! It's very easy to get frustrated and downcast. But that's because we are focusing on the wrong things. We should be focusing on God instead of the things of this world. The second half of that very same verse above goes like this:

"Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." - Psalm 43:5

Same verse, in two dramatically different parts. The verse contains both a question AND the answer.

The more we read the Bible, the more we understand just what God's will is. And that changes us. At least is should.

I've read the Bible 18 or 19 times now. I am still being changed by it. Knowledge keeps increasing, but I will never "know it all," much less understand it all. That's called sanctification.

What frustrates me is that "Christians", who say they believe in God, do not do what He tells them to. I'm guilty of this as well. It's like reading a 65mph speed limit sign and then doing 120 into town to get milk. That's called disobedience.

And that brings me to the sad part. By reading the Bible, we can get a pretty good idea who will and won't be going to heaven. I'm not judging here, I'm just reading, and writing. For example, what do you think this means? Remember, Paul is writing to a church.

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, ¹⁰nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were." - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Here's some advice from God through the prophet Ezekiel. 

"I take no pleasure in the death of anyone. Repent and live." - Ezekiel 18

We need to stop doing what displeases God and start doing what we wants us to do. That's simply called obedience.

We need to spend a little more time thinking about what is pleasing in the eyes of God, rather than satisfying our OWN desires our what "feels good" in our own hearts.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:5-6

If we disagree with what the Bible says, who do you think is right or wrong? Us, or God? The born sinner? Or the Righteous One?

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments." - John 14:15

Easy Believism

I was scrolling through YouTube, looking for something to watch, when I came across a video by J. Vernon McGee. I've heard him on the radio (WRVM) many times before with his "Through The Bible" series, but I'd never seen his face before, so I clicked on the video.

The video was entitled "Dr. J. Vernon McGee DESTROYS Lordship Savation heresy!"

"Heresy? Hmm. I believe in Lordship salvation..." So I watched the video. And then I did some research.

According to Wikipedia, Dr. McGee died in 1988 - an ordained Presbyterian pastor. Uh-oh. From what I have read about the Presbyterian church, it is a very left-leaning organization. Here's my proof of that from their own website.

Next, I Googled "Lordship Salvation" and found GotQuestions.org's article on the same. I read it from beginning to end. It only confirmed my lordship salvation belief. That's where I found the title for today's story - Easy Believism. Apparently, it is the opposite side of the lordship salvation discussion.

In their article, Easy Believism is described as "salvation by faith alone to the extent that those who trust in Christ are under no obligation to live transformed lives. Easy believism is not just holding to sola fide (“faith alone”). Rather, easy believism is a rejection of any degree of repentance or change as a necessary aspect of saving faith."

In other words, salvation is by faith alone and there is no reason to live a changed life as a result.

Here are some examples of Easy Believism teachers I have found - Joel Osteen, Bobby Schuller, Chuck Swindoll

Lordship Salvation pastors - John MacArthur, Voddie Baucham, Paul Washer, Billy Graham, David Wilkerson

Here's what the Bible says:

"Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, ²³and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, ²⁴and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness." - Ephesians 4:22-24

And James says this:

"What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? ¹⁵If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, ¹⁶and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what goodb is that? ¹⁷So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." - James 2:14-17

If there is no change in our hearts, are we then truly saved? I think not, according to the Bible.

"Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, ¹⁰nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

"Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." - 2 Corinthians 7:10

There must be repentance of our sins before we receive salvation. It says it right there!

"Jesus is Lord!" people say in Easy Believism. Jesus says, "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" - Luke 6:46

Here's a fun little exercise. Open your favorite Bible app and do a word search for the word 'repent.' Count all of the verses and see how many you can find (I found 70+ in most translations. 105 in the King James Vesion.

'Repent, Believe and Forever Receive' is what we teach in VBS. Not Repent, Believe, then do whatever you want.

Kill Them?

So, here we are at a crossroads in our faith. Well, not really. But it IS a time to reflect on what we truly believe, and just how far we are willing to go to apply those beliefs in our lives. Open your Bibles to Deuteronomy 13.

Deuteronomy is the book most often quoted by Jesus. One could easily say it is foundational to the life of any Christian. Yeah? Well, chew on this:

“⁶If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your fathers have known, ⁷some of the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, ⁸you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him. ⁹But you shall kill him." - Deuteronomy 13:6-9

Okay . . . so, do we go out and start killing people who don't believe like we do? It's right there in the Bible. One word - context.

In this text, God was giving instructions to the Israelites. They were about the enter The Promised Land. God also tells the Israelites later in Deuteronomy WHY He wants them to do this.

"Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the Lord your God." - Deuteronomy 20:18

God hates sin. Remember the flood? That was because of sin. Paul tells us in Romans that "the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 6:23

Time and time again God told Moses, "you must purge the evil from among you." - Deuteronomy 17:7

So, why isn't this done today? In some U.S. states the punishment for killing someone IS death. But in other places it is not.

Look at the world we live in today. Sin is everywhere! Look at Jerusalem. There are people who "serve other gods" living there. The Al Aqsa Mosque is right there on the Temple Mount!

So, what am I saying? That we should go out and kill every non-Christian? No. But what I AM saying is this . . .

God will.

"⁴¹The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. ⁴²They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." - Matthew 13:41-42

That was Jesus speaking.

Okay. Trivia time. What was the first command that God gave to Abram?

"The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you." - Genesis 12:1

Other translations use the words 'get out,' 'flee,' 'go from,' and 'get thee out.' You get the idea. God's first command was to leave everything Abram had ever known. God, it seems, had a plan.

We are in a similar situation today. God is still telling us to leave our old self behind and He will lead us to a 'land' He will show us.

“Go now and leave your life of sin.” - John 8:11

Are we following God's command our lives of sin? Uhh . . .

Remember when the angels went to Lots house? They wanted Lot to leave because God was going to destroy the city he was living in. Even when they were fleeing, Lot's wife looked back, and perished for doing so.

Abram followed God's command. It CAN be done. So, why don't we? Lack of faith? Or is it our own comfort? Have we ever felt led by God's Holy Spirit? Then why don't we follow? Good question.

Here's a convicting verse to consider in light of our disobedience.

"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord' and do not do what I say?" - Luke 6:46

It's not too late for us to LEAVE our life of sin and follow Jesus. But one day it will be to late. And that day is quickly approaching. 

Two questions remain for each of us to answer. What are we doing today that God wants us to leave behind? What are we waiting for?

Problem Solving 101

There is an unfinished jigsaw puzzle waiting in the sunroom right now. It is extremely slow-going and very tedious. The remaining pieces, about 150 of them, are all the same basic color and shape. Yet, progress is being made. How? Basic problem solving.

1. Assess the situation

2. Determine the root cause

3. Create a solution

4. Implement the plan

Upon closer examination there ARE slight differences in the color of the puzzle pieces. Very slight, but they are there. And the brush strokes of the artist are right to left on his painting. Puzzle piece placent attempts just got cut in half . . . or lower!

Examine the facts, come to a conclusion. Either the piece doesn't fit or . . . BINGO!

As we read the Bible it doesn't take long to figure out that God doesn't like sin (Genesis 3). He hates it SO much that anyone who commits a sin faces death - eternity in hell. That's a problem. How do we solve it?

Further examination reveals that God actually does provide a way to get into heaven and have eternal life with Him. His name is Jesus. We must repent of the sins that we have committed and then become a disciple - learning from Him and becoming obedient to His will. BINGO!

WE are the puzzle pieces. You and I. And no matter how hard we try, we just can't seem to fit (sin). But God has the ability to re-shape us - His Holy Spirit. He can change the sinful human heart with a word from His mouth. God created the solution to this puzzle called life - Jesus.

All that remains is for us to implement the plan. And there's the snag. Our free will. God has provided, but it's up to us. We need to make a choice.

"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33

"I lift up my eyes unto the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the mader of heaven and earth." - Psalm 121:1-2

Light It Up

This time of year, when I get up, it is still dark outside. Cars drive by on their way to work. Their headlights light up the entire living room as they pass by. But soon it is dark again . . . and all is quiet.

It's the perfect time to pray. So, why don't I? I'm wrapped up in other things - scrolling through Facebook or writing one of these stories. I am missing out on what SHOULD be the best part of my day. What's wrong with me?

The room lights up again. Another car coming down the road? No. It's my phone! Someone sent me a message! How wonderful!!

And that's when I began to wonder, how does God feel when we pray? Does heaven light up when we pray? Does God's HEART light up?

When someone I love sends me a message, I know exactly how I feel. Does God feel the same way when we pray to him?

Of course, I don't have any answers to these questions. But I do know this. God loves us. It says so in His Word. Say it with me . . .

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." - John 3:16

God sacrificed His Son, His ONLY Son, so that we might live. Of course He loves to hear from us!

I received a text message from someone this week. It truly made my heart light up. It was from a dear friend - a youth group kid from 16 years ago. Read it slowly. Does this sound like it's worthy of being a prayer?

"Good morning! I'm missing you a ton! Sorry that I haven't been in contact, it's been, a lot. I think of you often and I'm so grateful to have you in my life."

Gifts from God often come in unexpected ways. They are never what we expect them to be. But they are ALWAYS just what we need. And they are PRICELESS!

That message came from my friend Kortney (speaking of gifts from God). It's now been one month since she received a heart transplant and two new lungs.

Heavenly Father, how I long to see you coming in your glory, riding on the clouds. I love you and miss you so much. I'm sorry I haven't been praying as much as I should. The events in this world are just so distracting to me. There is so much hate in this world. But I do think of you throughout each day - whispered prayers of thanks and praise for all you do. I'm so grateful to have you in my life. My Lord and my Savior. And it is in your merciful name that I pray. Amen.
