In the book of Exodus God gives Moses a description for the construction of the tabernacle. The tabernacle was where God came down and met with the high priest and spoke to His people. A complete description of the tabernacle can be found in Exodus 26.
In Exodus 27:9-15 we can also find a description of The Court of the Tabernacle. The south and north sides were 100 cubits long and the east and west sides were 50 cubits. It was a rectangle.
Are you ready for some cool stuff? God tells Moses where he wants all of the people to camp around the tabernacle. There were 12 tribes - 3 tribes on each side. The Book of Numbers (Numbers 2) describes the layout of the camp.
On the north side were the tribes of Dan, Asher and Nephtali (157,600 people). On the east side were the tribes of Judah, Issachar and Zebulun (186,400 people). The south side of the tabernacle camped the tribes of Reuben, Simeon and Gad (151,450 people) and on the west side camped Ephraim, Manessah and Benjamin (108,100).
Any idea what that looked like from God's perspective - from the air? As the sun rises in the east (Jesus is The Son you know) a perfect cross is seen, like what this picture shows.
Do you see what I see? It looks like a cross to me! And in the middle of the cross was God - appearing in a cloud.
When Jesus was crucified, He too was in the middle of the cross. He too was God who came to earth to live with His people. What did God tell Mary his name was to be?
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). - Matthew 1:23
When God came down to "be with us" during those tabernacle days He was the literal embodiment of the meaning of Jesus' name - Immanuel. God with us.
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. It's perfect!
The more we read and discover things like this, the more we realize God's perfect plan, His perfect design through time for His people. His children.
