Memorial

This past Sunday we had communion at our church. We do that once each month. Some churches serve communion every other week, others EVERY week. It doesn't really matter, as long as "as often as you eat of this bread and drink of this cup, do so in remembrance of me."

Prior to communion, our pastor uses a Biblical story as an illustration. There are many to choose from. Last Sunday it was the story of God's people crossing the Jordan River into The Promised Land.

"So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” - Joshua 4:4-7

Our pastor's point was that communion is 'a memorial' to Jesus. And he's right. But then I got thinking....

What is our personal memorial to Jesus? We can't carry 12 stones around with us all day long. According to our communion verse we're supposed to 'do this in remembrance of me.'

I don't know about you, but I find myself thinking about Jesus many times throughout each day. What do we do as a rememberance then? The answer is simple.

Love.

What does love look like? It's visiting a friend who is going through a tough time. It is taking someone a meal who is sick. It's driving six hours to comfort someone who just lost a friend. Or simply give someone a hug because you care about them.

Love comes in many different forms. And guess what....

Each of us is a memorial to Jesus. His love resides in ALL who believe. Jesus is what this world needs right now and WE are His delivery service.

So, 'set up your memorial' by living your life for Jesus. How? By loving everyone you meet.

"Do this in remembrance of me."
