They think that when they die, they just go to heaven and live happily ever after with all of their friends and family members, dogs and cats, golf clubs and their favorite beer. Sadly, they will never experience what heaven is like until they come to realize just what it takes to get in.
The key is knowing who God is and what He demands. God is perfect and therefore demands perfection from all those who hope to enter heaven. We are NOT perfect. Our problem is our lack of understanding about just what sin is.
We can say, "I've never killed anyone, or stolen anything." Read this. This is Jesus talking.
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ ²²But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. " - Matthew 5:21-22
If being angry keeps us out of heaven, do you think we have a shot at getting in? No.
Any sin keeps us out of heaven. And everyone, EVERYONE, has sinned. His disciples asked Jesus, "Who then can be saved?" Good question. It is actually quite easy to be saved.
In a prayer to God, tell Him that you repent of your sins and that you are sorry for all that you have done, and not done. Tell Him you give up that life and seek His forgiveness. Then tell Him that you believe that Jesus is who He says He is - the Son of the Living God. Say that you believe that Jesus' shed blood is an atoning sacrifice for your sins. Then your earnest, heartfelt prayer will be heard. THEN you will receive the Holy Spirit and become changed. A new creation.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" - 2 Corinthians 5:17
But this whole "get into heaven" thing depends on The Head Judge at the track meet. He is the ONLY judge and His name is Jesus. Without His Holy Spirit living in us WE WILL NOT ENTER.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. ²²On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ ²³And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’" - Matthew 7:21-23
We do NOT want to hear THAT!
