Desperate For You

Someone once asked me, "How do you know when you've found the love of your life?" My answer has always been, "When you know, you'll know." That is very true. But that love, and the sheer depth of it, goes WAY beyond any earthly constraints.

I had a wonderful hour of worship the other night. Unfortunately, it took place between the hours of 2:00 and 3:00 AM! Ah well. It was actually very nice. Quiet. Peaceful. Humble and submissive.

The song at the end of this story was playing in my head. I encourage you to give it a listen. When you get to the words "Your holy presence, living in me" push pause and think about that for a moment. God's Holy Spirit LIVES in the heart of every believer. That should be VERY humbling for the Christian.

Then this . . .

"And I, I'm desperate for you."

Are we DESPERATE for God?  I don't think we are as "desperate" for Him as we should be. How about you? What does desperation look like in the heart of the believer?

We recently had a lot of extreme weather here in Central Wisconsin. Two feet of snow, a major ice storm, and 8" of rain. The result was what they are calling a 100-year flood. Would you be desperate for God if that happened to you?

I drove by one of the flooded towns yesterday. The water covers the main street that runs through town. Further upstream it's just as bad. The picture above looks like sharks swimming in the ocean. Nope. It's sturgeon spawning . . .  in the boat landing parking lot.

Please pray for the people affected by the flooding in New London, Fremont, Shiocton, and all places in between. And that's just in Waupaca County.

And then thank God that no one has perished. May our prayers be desperate for God's protective hand to be over us as we ALL deal with the events of this world. Thank you!

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10

It's A Miracle!

This is the season for miracles. But my wife and I never thought we would witness one in our own house.

Our local weatherman said we were going to have an ice storm Wednesday night and into Thursday. Umm, well, he was right. And what a storm! We lost five of our trees, two of them falling on our carport, and crushing it.

We lost power on Thursday about noon. Right in the middle of my wife baking some of her apricot bread, our favorite. She was really upset about that. Me too. It's delicious.

It was a long day of cutting up fallen trees, one of which spanned the entire road in front of our house. I even had to use the snow shovel to remove all the ice from the roadway.

We had two of our neighbors stop and offer to help. That was really nice, and I told them so, but I was just about done and they drove off.

The power came on at 4:00. I'm happy to say that our new generator worked perfectly (Generac 2000 if you're looking for a good portable).

Now, here's the miracle. After all of our unexpected work at damage control, my wife opened the oven to remove het half-baked bread.

"It looks done!" she exclaimed. "How is that possible? We had no power."

She cut open the loaf to make sure it was done, and it was! Then she cut us each a slice, we buttered it and ate it. It was, indeed, perfect.

Watch Over Me

I saw something recently that made stop and think for a moment. It was SO true.

"What if we woke up tomorrow with only what we thanked God for today." Ooo. Ouch. Would we still have our jobs, our houses, our cars? What about our family and friends? Would our hearts still be beating? And what about our lungs? Still breathing?

It is VERY easy to take things for granted in this world. And yet, we are not promised even one more day. Are we living with gratitude for all of the things that God has provided?

God watches over those who truly believe in Him. How do I know this?

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." – Isaiah 41:10

"The Lord will keep you from all harm; he will watch over your life." – Psalm 121:7

That should do it.

If God watches over us, shouldn't we thank Him for His protection? Of course! In addition to other thousands of things He provides for us!

Lord God, thank you for your ever-watchful eye and your mighty hand. Your provision is unmatched and there is no other god like You. We thank You and praise You for all that You have done, and all that You have yet to do. Amen.

The Overhang

This is a picture of the overhang on our house. There are several reasons houses are equipped with these things but their most important function is that of protection.

I have never actually thanked my overhangs for their protection. They ARE inanimate afterall. They have no feelings or emotions. They simply do what they do.

When I designed our house I just naturally put overhangs on the roof because "that's what people do." The housing company that I worked for had them on THEIR houses so . . . why not.

Overhangs allow us to open the windows when it's raining. They provide shade when the sun and heat are trying to get inside. They divert the rain AWAY from the house, helping to keep even the foundation dry.

"But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you." - Psalm 5:11

Hmm. Isn't that what Jesus did for the disciples when they were in the boat and a storm came along?

"A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. ³⁸Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

³⁹He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

⁴⁰He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

⁴¹They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” - Mark 4:37-41

Jesus protected those He loved from the storm. They should have had more faith in Him, but they didn't really know Him, asking, "Who is this?"

One way to keep the weather outside our homes is to have overhangs on our roofs. The key to avoiding the effects of "storms" in our daily lives is knowing Jesus. Trust in Him today.

Double Barrel

In Psalm 23, David writes about God being his Shepherd. We immediately get an image in our minds similar to the one above. Making us "lie down in green pasture" and leading us "beside still waters." But that's only part of the picture. A shepherd always carried TWO tools of the trade with him or her.

"Thy ROD and thy STAFF, they comfort me." - Psalm 23:4

In the painting above we see a shepherd's staff. This staff is used for guiding the sheep. The hook it's end can be put around a sheep's neck to pull them back to where they belong.

A shepherd's rod, a little shorter and straight, is used as a weapon and a means of protection. It is used to ward off any wild animals who might be interested in devouring the sheep. Lions and bears are two examples of these. Satan is another.

Jesus protects us and He guides us. He guides us with the Holy Spirit and with His Word - The Bible. He also protects us with these same tools, but also with His angels.

"For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways." - Psalm 91:11

These two shepherd's tools protected and comforted David. And they should do the same for us as well.

Can you think of any examples of shepherds using these items in the Bible?

Aaron - "Aaron threw his staff in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent." - Exodus 7:10

Moses - "Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground." - Exodus 14:16

David - "When a lion or a bear came and took a sheep from the flock, I went out after it and attacked it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth; and when it rose up against me, I grabbed it by its mane and struck it (with his rod) and killed it." - 1 Samuel 17:34-35

We should be comforted knowing that God is watching over us, to keep us safe and to "guide us into all truth." (John 16:13).

Watch Over Me

The Bible is filled with many great reminders and truths. Two of them really stand out for those who are struggling, are alone, or in harm's way.

The first is an Old Testament passage from Psalms.

"The Lord watches over you - the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm - he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." - Psalm 112:5-8

The second encouraging verse is like it. Only it is from the New Testament and references Jesus, the One who was born of God.

"We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them." 1 John 5:18

We who believe are not invincible, nor is an angel likely to appear and strike down an enemy before our eyes. But God does see everything we do and everything that is done to us.

Many years ago, a young girl in our area was abducted, raped, and murdered. Many were left wondering, "Why?" God saw it all happening. He knew it was going to happen before the girl was even born. Many would ask, "Why didn't God stop this from happening?"

We live in a sin-filled world. Bad things happen. There is evil at every turn these days. But, even the evil that exists and acts out against us, is part of God's over-arching plan for salvation. Salvation? Salvation for our souls.

What possible good could come out of such an evil act? It's hard to say but I can say this with great confidence. It changed me.

It was because of this girl's death that I became more protective of my own daughter. And later, after being saved through a new-found faith in Christ, I became a youth leader and loved and guided many teens as they sought the Lord.

Who knows what will happen after that shooting in Tennessee? Perhaps schools will become even MORE safe for our children as a result. But know this. God knows what's going on in your life. He knows your hurt and your pain. Talk to Him about it. Pray about it. Lean on Him. He has promised to never leave you or foresake you (Deuteronomy 31:6).

So, let that be our prayer then, today. Turn off the news, mourn for the dead, and pray this prayer. Right now.

"Lord, watch over me."

Look At Me

Have you ever been out walking by yourself and heard footsteps coming up behind you? That can be a little freaky. Your mind starts messing with you, telling you that you're about to be robbed, or worse. You finally decide to stop and turn around and . . .

No one is there.

Do you believe in guardian angels? The Bible does refer to angel visitations here on earth, therefore they DO exist and they DO make visits into our lives.

Several years ago I was driving to work when a deer ran out in front of my car. I was doing 70 miles per hour. The deer was killed, my car was totaled and I escaped injury free. The deer should have come right through my windshield, yet it went up and over the car. Angelic intervention?

"The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them." - Psalm 34:7

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." - Matthew 18:10

"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;" - Psalm 91:11"

There ARE angels and God DOES command them to protect us according to His will. So why should we be surprised? Has God been watching over YOUR life?

I heard this song the other day - an oldie but a goodie. It's secular in nature but, if you sing the opening words from Jesus' perspective, it makes perfect sense.

There is someone walking behind you
Turn around, look at me
There is someone watching your footsteps
Turn around, look at me

When we place our faith in Jesus we receive that "extended warranty" those telemarketers are always calling about. Only God's warranty lasts forever. God cares about ALL of His children. If you are not one of them, please consider His free offer today!

It can be quite comforting knowing that God is walking behind us in our lives. Turn around and acknowledge Him and He will make all your paths straight.

So Who Are You?

Until yesterday I didn't even knew her name. Come to think of it, I have never actually seen her face either. She was always wearing a mask. Yet she seemed familiar to me, like we had met before, but we hadn't. Like we knew each other all our lives, but we didn't. Like we were . . . family.

This old body of mine was in the shop for some repair work this month. Physical therapy for my aching shoulder. As I sat in the waiting room for my first appointment a grey-haired woman came towards me wearing a mask. The per-registration lady for my physical therapist.

"What are you reading?" she asked.

"The Bible. The Book of Revelation," I replied.

"Ooooooh! That's wonderful . . . . Brother."

It says in The Book of Ephesians that all believers in Jesus Christ will be sealed. Hmm. I wonder. What if "the seal" was in our brains or our hearts? And what if we would just KNOW who other believers were.

Well, I can tell you with 100% certainty that my masked friend and I knew that the other was a believer just by having a two minute conversation.

"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit," - Ephesians 1:13

Does God's Holy Spirit allow us to recognize other believers? I think He does! Are all brothers and sisters linked in some subconscious way, joined together in one eternal family through the Holy Spirit? I think we are!

Before I left my new-found sister yesterday we had a brief conversation.

"What church do you go to?" she asked.

"Calvary Chapel - Waupaca"

"What!?! We go to Calvary Chapel - Appleton!"

"What's your pastor's name?"

"Pastor Dave."

"Yes! I heard his wife speak at a women's conference in Green Lake. Wonderful woman ."

"Vicki."

"YES!"

I suppose we could have talked all day but it was time to get back to work. I gave her a hug and said, "Your name. I don't even know your name."

"Sherry."

"Well, see you later Sherry (in heaven). It was nice to meet you."

I will most likely never see my "sister" again - in this life. That's okay. I will see her again in heaven. I will get to meet her husband and hear about their kids. And we all can sit around, talking about our amazing God who provides for our every need and protects us from the evil one. And the fact that He has adopted us into His family, in love.

Oh, and how will those people who do NOT believe in Jesus. How will they know we are Christians? That one's easy. By our love. Our love for one another - believers and non-believers alike.  "They will KNOW that we are Christians by our love."

Unfailing Love

When I was in college I heard a song by Seals & Crofts called Wayland The Rabbit. It changed my way of looking at things. There are different ways we can receive things into our hearts. Life. Death. And love.

We humans always tend to see things through our own eyes. That seems rather obvious. That's what we use to see things with. But what I'm actually talking about is our perceived importance of our lives in this world. It's always about us.

Here's an example of what I mean. There once was a young family - a father, a mother, a sister and a brother.  A happy family as families go, but one day all that changed. The young girl was kidnapped and then murdered. An incredibly tragic tale that is also, unfortunately, all too true.

Her mother and father grieved. The girls brother too. The whole community where they lived was in shock. Who could do such a thing? And why?

That's what things looked like from a human perspective. That's the way things looked here on earth, through our eyes. From a heavenly perspective things often take on a different view.

What if I was to tell you that, as a result of that young girl's death, her mother would become a comfort to other parents across the nation who had suffered similar losses. And this mother's faith was on display for all to see.

What if I told you that an entire community, and state, rallied around this grieving family - showing a state's love and compassion for a hurting family.

What if I told you that there was a young father who was also devastated by this young girl's death? He too had a young son and daughter. The mercy in this man's heart for area youth sprung out of this girl's death and he became a youth leader in his church, telling hundreds about Jesus. Countless others were effected and changed in some positive way.

I'm not saying that God allowed a young girl to be abducted and murdered but look at all the good that came out of her death. That sounds uncaring, even harsh, but look what God did to a community. He turned a tragedy into a positive. And now she is with God in heaven, where she always wanted to be in the first place.

And don't ever forget that God changed the lives of millions for good with the death of one man. His Son.

We humans tend too look at things through our own eyes, instead of God's. God loves us in ways we cannot begin to see or fathom the depths of. We may never even know the countless times He has protected us from harm or even saved us from death. His love for us, His children, reaches to the heavens! His faithfulness reaches to the skies! Let us rejoice in God's love every day of our lives. Even on the darkest of nights His light will still shine bright - the promise of a new day and a new life to come. Lift your eyes up. Your hearts too. And rejoice in a great God who cares.

"5 Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. 6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, LORD, preserve both people and animals. 7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. 9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. 10 Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart." - Psalm 36:5-10

Covered In Grace

Not that long ago I wrote a story about how we humans tend to SEE things but we don't really OBSERVE or PERCEIVE like we should. We can be guilty of this without really knowing it. Like ME, for example.

The company I work for is putting an addition onto our building. It's fun watching the building going up and to actually see the fruits of our labor. We drew the plans for the project and now, there it is. We're observing it being built, right before our very eyes.

You've had a little time to look at the opening picture for this story. Tell me, what did you see? Take a close look now. Specifically, take a look at the roof. Do you see anything worthy of a story for this blog? Perhaps if I zoomed in a little you will be able to see it.

The underlayment for the yet-to-be-installed shingles is made by a company named "Grace." Our office building is literally covered with Grace!!! I can't make this stuff up. It's just too unbelievable.

Our lives are covered with grace too. Just like Grace roofing underlayment protects our new office from ice and rain damage, God's grace and mercy protect us from the coming wrath and the just penalty for those who refuse to believe and are found dead in their sins.

The roof of our new addition is a visible reminder of God's love for each of us. He covers us with His grace as we grow and mature in our faith.

The building below the roof was raw and unfinished when the Grace went on the roof, but now the building has windows, electrical and plumbing inside it. The walls will soon be finished and painted, the exterior will receive brick and finish metal trim. The building will be made beautiful - all under Grace. And so it is with us.

Our sanctification is a life-long process under God's grace. He continues to teach us and instruct us as we slowly become "finished" in God's eyes. God is transforming us into the image of His Son - Jesus. And it is by God's grace that we "covered" and it was the sacrifice of Jesus that paid the price.

"20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. 21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe." - Romans 3:20-22

We would be lost . . . but for the grace of God.

But for The Grace of God - Keith Urban

The Diversion

There once was a young boy. He wasn't very big by the world's standards. Quite small in stature really. All the neighborhood boys liked to pick on him. They liked to push him around and threaten him every chance they got. Doing so made them feel superior I guess. It made them feel powerful.

This little boy's name was Abe. It was a wonder that Abe was able to survive at all in the neighborhood in which he lived. A miracle really. But Abe had a secret weapon that kept him alive. His friend Sam.

Sam was huge. He was the biggest kid on the block - some say on the entire planet, although they weren't really sure about that. Every time Abe found himself in trouble it seemed like Sam was always there to help. The neighborhood bullies always scattered when big Sam showed up on the scene.

Sam always took care of Abe. No one's exactly sure just why. He just did. Something to do with family I think. Blood's thinker than water and all that. Must be true.

Everything was good between Abe and Sam. It seemed as if the two of them would be friends forever. Nothing could come between them . . . or at least that's what everybody thought . . . including Abe and Sam.

Years later, when all the neighborhood boys were older, the bullies hatched a plan - still trying to get at Abe and teach him all those lessons they wanted him to learn. . . with their fists. But they knew they had to keep Sam away from his friend. Perhaps if they created some kind of diversion. Something to keep Sam occupied and distracted.

The gang members thought long and hard about what to do. Maybe they could drug him and then tie him up as he slept. Sam would probably break all their ropes. No, this trap for Sam had to be something he would never suspect. What to do?

The leader of the gang of bullies stood up, smiling. He offered his nasty plan to the group with great confidence. It really was quite ingenious. His plan for getting at Abe was to distract Sam with . . . a woman. And he knew just the woman for the job - Cindy.

Cindy didn't have a very good reputation. Many men in town had lost everything they had while pursuing her. Families were destroyed, fortunes lost, some men took their own lives after Cindy worked her magic on them, and that is exactly what it was - magic. Black magic.

The gang leader explained that Cindy owed him a favor. He would get her to pursue Sam and eventually lead him away from his small friend. She did it to other unsuspecting souls. She could do it to Sam too.

And so the plan was set into motion. Soon Cindy and Sam were fairly close. Sam thought it was true love. Cindy knew it wasn't. They began going out on dates and hanging around together. Sam and Abe were spending less and less time together. Soon the boys would spring a trap on Abe and finally teach him just who the REAL boss in the neighborhood was.

Friday night was the big dance. It was also time for the boy's plan to go into action. Cindy had asked Sam to take her to the dance and he agreed. Abe wasn't going to the dance - he had to work. The time was right.

That night, as Abe returned from work, the neighborhood bullies were waiting and cornered Abe in an alley. Abe looked around, hoping he might catch a glimpse of Sam but Sam was not there. The boys closed in on Abe and one by one they began to strike out at him. First they taunted Abe, then the pushing began followed by the punches.

There was no place for Abe to go. Sam was nowhere to be found. So Abe did the only thing he could. He began to fight.

And fight he did! For as much as Abe was outnumbered he was actually holding his own. His enemies were landing some punched but so was Abe. But they bullies outnumbered Abe 10-1. There was no way Abe could hold them off forever. That's when they saw it. They ALL saw it and froze right where they stood. It was a light.

A light was coming down towards them from the sky. They all held up their hands trying to shield their eyes form the brightness. Then came the wind. Powerful! What was going on!?!

"Hey, you boys down there! Knock it off! There is a squad car on the way. I want you to stay right where you are until the police get there. You got it?"

The boys nodded. They thought about trying to escape but the light was so bright they couldn't see. SO they just dropped to their knees and waited.

It wasn't long before the cops arrived, the light faded from view and thing began to calm down. One of the police officers asked they gang why they had surrendered to easily.

"Most fights like this end badly. There's a pursuit, handcuffs. What made you guys stop so suddenly?"

"It was the helicopter. That thing was nasty! It blinded us and we couldn't see a thing. When did you guys get that thing?"

"We don't have a helicopter. No one around here does."

The preceding story was an allegory of a modern day scenario. Can you figure out what it is and who all the players are? I bet you can if you really think about it. And that is exactly what you will have to do because THIS is where my story ends.

Those who have ears, let them hear.

Watchful

The weekend before last, my chunk of the Hall family converged on Battle Creek, MI for our annual March Birthday Weekend Extravaganza! That sounds impressive, like some major city-wide festival, but it's really just a couple dozen people getting together and talking and eating . . . and watching grandchildren and grand nieces swarming all over the place.

It takes most of the day to get there. We leave our home shortly after breakfast and drive until it's time for supper. But despite the trip there and back, the journey is always well worth the time spent in the car. That's because at the end of our travels we get to see people we love and that makes journey more than worth it.

There are dangers on the roadways though, especially driving through Chicago as we do. Lots and lots of cars, many of them driving WELL beyond the speed limit. One has to be ever watchful. Side mirrors, rear view mirrors. Always watchful, always protecting.

While we were in Michigan I noticed something about our grandson. He is on a mission. A mission to get his hands on as many things as he possibly can! He literally runs around the room, eyes darting back and forth, looking for things to play with or to destroy. Somebody's phone, a wireless mouse for great grandma's computer, a dog . . . MY laptop!

I'd sit in the family room, writing a story, while my phone sat on the arm of the chair - an open invitation for my grandson. As soon as he noticed it sitting there, seemingly unprotected, he would start coming towards it, full speed ahead. His sudden motion usually caught my eye and I would pick up the phone at the last minute, simultaneously denying my grandson the pleasure of a new toy and denying myself the cost of a new phone. My grandson just likes to explore is all. He likes to seek. But I always have my eye on him because I know that sometimes he can get himself into trouble . . . without even knowing it.

My son took HIS son outside for some father/son playtime and some fresh air. My son let HIS son explore and seek things on his own. He slid down snow banks, ate some snow, but always with his father's supervision. "You don't want to eat the YELLOW snow" is a helpful tip for an inexperienced young snow eater.

For a young boy seeking to discover things, there are certain things he is not ready to find yet. The road at the end of the driveway for example. Our grandson is not capable of understanding that big cars drive on that road and they can be dangerous. The stream that runs through my parents backyard is another danger for little boy who don't know how to swim yet. Water can be a fascinating thing to play with but it is also dangerous. And my grandson's father was there all the time, watching, protecting.

God is like that but He will let us get into all kinds of trouble, lots of trouble, just so we will REALLY learn the lessons He wants us too.

Have you gone through a struggle lately? What did you learn from it? How many friends came along side you when you needed it? Did God reach out to you in some unexpected way? Life is filled with lessons, opportunities and challenges. How do we handle them? Do we throw up our arms and wonder, "Why is all this happening to me?" or do we pause and think, "God, what do you want me to learn in this?"

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28

"For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity." - Proverbs 24:16

"Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come." - 1 Corinthians 10:11
