We all have our own ideas for who we want to be. That's fine and all, but who does GOD want us to be? That's the real question for the Christian, isn't it?

We can say we want to get married when we grow up and have 2.3 children, a good job and a nice, big house to live in . . . that's the American dream! But what if God has something else in mind? What if things don't turn out like we had hoped and our childhood dreams don't come true?

Let's stop right there. Look at our description of "the perfect life." Is that the life of a Christian? It's a self-centered description of a worldly life, is it not?

"Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is." - 1 John 3:2

Aren't we supposed to be submitting to HIS will in our lives? How does the Lord's Prayer go? It's "THY will be done," not MY will. Where in the Bible does it say that God wants us to be happy? Nowhere. There are even verses that say the opposite.

"In this life you WILL have trouble." - John 16:33

Think about it. Shouldn't our prayer be for God to make us into who HE wants us to be?

We often ask kids, "What do YOU want to be when you grow up?" Instead, shouldn't we ask,  "Where is God leading you?" Or, at a graduation party, do we ask the graduate, "What is God's will for you now?"

I'm thinking our prayer should be for God to make us into who HE wants us to be. Our job is to figure out what that job is. And accomplish it. For Him.

Workin' For A Livin'

Do you have a job? Have you been designated as "essential" by our government? During the week of April 19-25, nearly 30 million Americans filed for unemployment. So what do we do if we find ourselves without a job? How do we put food on the table?

It's interesting the types of jobs deemed "essential" in our country. Garbage collectors are "essential" while religious services are not. You can't cut peoples hair but you can perform an abortion. What do we do if we've lost our job and nobody's hiring?

The Bible is pretty clear about how things "worked" 2,000 years ago. You don't work, you don't eat.

"For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”

11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good." - 2 Thessalonians 3:10-13

These days we have unemployment compensation, social security, disability income. But what would we, or could we, do to earn some cash if all we had was our abilities or our physical strength?

Interesting question. I look at myself and wonder what it is that I, on my own, could do to buy food and to pay my taxes? Answers are few and as hard to come by as a job.

I write stories but no one would pay money to read them. I could mow somebody's lawn I guess but I live five miles out of town. I could hunt and fish to put food in my belly but how do I get actual cash?

Think about it. How would we actually survive? The Bible tells us what to do. Or what NOT to do.

"So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." - Matthew 6:31-34

We read that and say, "Yeah, that's nice but I need to eat. My baby needs diapers." No! Read those verses again. The first sentence is a command by Jesus telling us "do not worry!" He actually says it twice.

Yeah, but.

NO! God will provide!! What we are lacking is patience, not a job. We lack faith, not food. That's a hard thing to stomach right now but it's true. Yes, look for a job. And look with open eyes. Well, there is a farmer down then road. He's hiring. Maybe he needs someone to drive the tractor. Look around!

A friend of mine lost her job. What is she doing? Making masks for people. Another friend of mine was looking for some puzzles. She also was out of work - a waitress. I took her some puzzles. She gave me some strawberry jam. God will provide. "O, ye of little faith."

I have GOT to stop listening to pastors who preach the truth of God's Word! They get me so fired up, I feel so convicted, that I feel like I should repent and change my ways! Said no. Christian. ever.

Yeah, that happened to me this past week. I stayed up late (10:00) and decided to watch Wretched TV. I hadn't watch Todd Friel in a while so when it came on I lingered there for a moment. That was all it took.

He was talking about "work" and it featured a video by Voddie Baucham. Voddie is one of my favorite pastors to listen to because he speaks the truth right out o

f the Bible. He's not afraid who it convicts because it's true. It's God's Word!

Well, Voddie was talking about "work" and how we were never meant to retire. We were created to work until we die.

Ouch.

Having just retired this past March I have enjoyed not having to go in to work. I still do stuff but it was always on my schedule. When I get around to it. Then I listened to Voddie's message. The video clip is only 2 minutes but that was enough.

And then this passage popped into my head. Jesus speaking now.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ - Matthew 25:34-40

If I might be so bold as to add a line to this passage it would be, "Whatever even you DIDN'T do for one of the least of these, you DIDN'T do for Me."

I am currently building a tiny home to be used by people who might suddenly need a place to stay. At least I was building it. I kind of stopped because of the cold weather and having to do things I'm not really sure about. If Jesus knocked on my door right now and asked, "How's my tiny house coming?" what would I say?

What could I say?

So this morning I am going to venture out and get to work. Then, should Jesus stop by and ask that convicting question, I can say, "Let me show You!"

What things are getting in the way of our work for the Lord? We need to take a look at ourselves. Is there something stopping us from doing what He asked us to do? If there is, we should probably get rid of that thing right away, and get to work!

Well, I made it. Today is my 65th birthday! I'm feeling pretty good, all things considered. I'm kind of excited actually. Why? Because I am about to venture into territory I have never explored before. Retirement!

My next blog, the one after this one, will be written by a retiree. Hey. Maybe my stories will be better written. I'll have more time to look them over before I post them. LOL!

The first thing I am going to do though on Monday morning is sleep in. For me that's 6 AM. If I can make it until then I'll be doing good. I'm excited to get going and I don't want to miss a single day.

When 6:30 rolls around though I'm going to be a little sad. That's usually the time I can be found at work, praying with my precious friend and workmate, Gayle. That's going to be a tough one for me. She is the one who got me thinking about Jesus and was instrumental in my upbringing as a new believer. But our friendship will last forever and I will stop back in at work every chance I get.

Jesus told us that we are supposed to love one another. That's easy for me to do. God has gifted me many wonderful friends at McMahon (where I work . . until this weekend). I love them and will miss them all.

I am also looking forward to spending more time with my wife Bev. Because she only works four days a week, every weekend from now on will now be a three-day weekend! I see many trips in our future. And breakfast together? That has never happened except on weekends. It will happen every day now though! :O

And of course there is the tiny home I am building. I am looking forward to that, spending time pounding nails with a few of my other retired friends. That will be nice. Especially when it will be used by someone in need.

But I think the thing I am looking forward to the most is spending more time with God. He always seems to get put last in our lives. We always have things to do and places to go and we often leave Him behind. That's not going to happen when I retire. God will get my first fruits of every day. That's the way it should be. The way it shall be.

There are those who fear change. They would rather keep things the way they were. They're comfortable. But "comfortable" is not where Jesus is found. We tend to seek Him only when we are struggling. We should seek Him always. Period.

I look forward to maintaining my earthly relationships while growing my heavenly one. The horizontal, and the vertical. The cross of Christ draws me close and that is where my joy is found . . . At the cross. The wonderful cross.

As For Me

It is less than six months now until I retire. People have been asking me what I'm going to do when I no longer have to go in to work. I'm not sure what they're expecting me to say because, when I give them my answer, they look at me funny. "I'm going to work!"

The way I see it I'm going to work harder AFTER I retire than I ever did before. That's because I'm going to love what I'll be doing. I'll be serving the Lord. Full time. And honestly, I can't wait.

Right now I always have my job in mind before committing to a meeting with someone or before volunteering somewhere. After I retire that commitment to work will no longer be there, so I can spend more time, and be more flexible with that time, serving Jesus.

I'm kind of excited at the prospect. Shouldn't we be excited for something like that?

Some guys I know do a lot of fishing when they retire. Some guys play a lot of golf. But as for me, I can think of nothing I'd rather do than make God smile.

14“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” - Joshua 24:14-15

I don't think there can be anything better to do with one's time than to serve God in whatever capacity we can. And while I can serve God even while I am at work, I can serve God MORE by working less and serving more. Does that make sense?

May God's Holy Spirit keep after me and protect me from Satan's slothful desires for my life. We should work hard no matter what we do. It's just easier to serve . . . if it doesn't become work. :)

Retirement? Nah!

Ever since I announced my retirement at work (March 2018) people have been asking me, "So, what are you going to do?" Wait. I have to DO something? I thought the whole idea of retirement was NOT doing things. I have a lot to learn.

So what would YOU do if you suddenly didn't have to work anymore? I guess I never really thought about it, until this week. One thing's for sure. I'm not going to get up as early as I do now. Four thirty is insane! I'll try six o'clock for a while and see how that works.

I'm looking forward to doing more stuff that I don't have the time to do now. Like clean my office and workroom downstairs. My wife will be doing cartwheels! I should probably transition slowly into the cleaning thing. Don't want to give my wife a heart attack.

I'm definitely going to read more. I'm reading through the Bible for the fifth time right now and am still learning new things each time I read. Getting to know God more is a very high priority.

But probably the thing I will enjoy doing the most is spending more time pouring into my relationships. Stopping back in at work and saying, "Surprise!" sounds like fun to me. And having breakfast with my wife! But the thing I am looking forward to the most is spending quality time in ALL of my relationships - past, present and future.

I'd like to change the "Well, I have to go nows" into "Where are you goings?" Know what I mean?

Retiring doesn't mean you're never going to do any work again. It means CHANGING the type of work you are doing. I look forward to that because for the past 12 years I have felt like I should have been doing something else. Maybe this is it!!

Most people think of retirement as not having to anything. I look at it as an opportunity to do MORE things.

I read something in the Book of Matthew last night that made me think about my retirement in a new light.

^"27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works." - Matthew 16:27

When Jesus returns, what will He find us doing? Will we be watching television in our bathrobe and slippers? Will we be sleeping in until noon after a late night out on the town? No. I don't think so. Not for me.

When Jesus returns I hope he finds me deep into a conversation with some kid who is struggling. Or catching up with a friend I haven't seen in a while. Or serving down at the local food pantry.

Yes, I will no longer have to go into work each day like I have for the past 40+ years, but I will keep myself busy working for The Lord. I can't think of anything more enjoyable or rewarding than to be found in His service. :)

Laborless Day?

So, it's Labor Day. Big deal. I get a day off from my real job so I can "labor" harder than I would if I didn't have the day off. Of course, we all like to get a jump on the holiday and we usually work our butts off in the yard or around the house the days leading up to our "day off". So by the time we actually get to Labor Day we're already too tired to enjoy it.

There might be a parade we could go watch or we might celebrate "the last official day of summer" by taking the family camping or on a picnic to a park but most people will spend it working anyway - mowing the lawn, seal-coating the driveway, or canning tomato sauce.

It could be worse though. For some reason I have this picture in my mind of Charlton Heston stomping straw into the mud so the Hebrew slaves could make bricks. I bet they would LOVE to have a day off from THAT labor!

If you think about it though, Labor Day is a day to celebrate God and the gifts He has given us. God has given us each certain abilities or "gifts". He gave us these skills, not only to put food on our tables, but He gave us the things we are good at to honor Him.

This Labor Day take a look at your job and ask yourself this question. How does what I do honor God? Think about it. You can probably come up with a list of things to thank God for.

Placing food on the table is one thing. What about the roof over our heads? Or the car we drive to work each day? And the relationships we have at work.

So, on this day let us give God thanks and praise for all of HIS labors on our behalf. It is only right and fitting to do so. Otherwise we labor in vain.

Busyness

This week work was been really busy. I was working on three projects all at once and guess what? They all had the same deadline. Yesterday. Isn't that wonderful? Needless to say, my Friday was rather full. Too full.

Don't get be wrong. Having work to do is a blessing. Having a job is a blessing. However, having three projects with the same deadline is . . . insane.

The problem with having too many things to do is that other things tend to take a back seat. Important things like family,  spouses . . . and God. Those who chose to sacrifice the important things I just mentioned in favor of work, I feel, are making a mistake. THEY are the insane ones.

I noticed a few things about myself this week during my work-a-thon. I came home depressed on a few nights. Anxious. I imagined what it might be like to have a heart attack. I didn't really want to find out. My stomach was been feeling out of sorts. In addition to these physical symptoms, I was also neglecting friends at work, my wife at home, and, most importantly, my time with God.

Wednesday night I spent time talking with a young friend from my youth group days. She has a 18-month old little girl who keeps her mommy and daddy very busy. As I listened to my friend tell me about her day I wondered, "I thought I was busy! How can this young mom find any time for God with all the things she is doing?" I should have taken my words as advice to myself this week. I'm such a Martha. Or maybe it should be Marty for us guys. Read this story about what it means to be a Martha in the Bible.

"38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10: 38-42

Jesus was "the good portion" in Mary's life. Service was the not so good portion in Martha's. May we never place our God in the back seat for anything.

During my prayers this week I spoke about my deciding to not working overtime, even though it was offered to me. I put my foot down at work and decided the lure of extra money wasn't worth the cost. It wasn't some statement coming from an old man thinking about retirement. It was from a follower of Jesus not wanting to diminish the importance of his King.

This life is short enough. It can be made even shorter by ignoring the important things in life. Our jobs are temporary. Our life with Jesus is eternal. Where do you think we should place OUR emphasis?

We are told in Colossians 3:23 to "work hard at our jobs, as if working for the Lord," but nowhere does it say that we should place our jobs above God or give more importance to them than we should. In fact, the Bible speaks against it.

²⁴ “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." - Matthew 6:24

Finally, I was reminded of a song as I wrote this. Here's a line from the chorus.

"It seems such a waste of time. If that's what it's all about. Mama if that's movin' up then I'm movin' out. I'm movin' out."

Passion

I see them in their offices. In early. Staying late. Working through lunch. Working on the weekends. Totally focused on what they're doing. That description applies to many of the people where I work. They have a passion for architecture, for structural design, for designing amazing buildings for the people who need them.

That's the way scripture says we are to work.

"23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." - Colossians 3:23-24

But what if we aren't excited about our work? What if we aren't working enthusiastically for our employers? Does that mean we are disobeying God? Quite possibly. But maybe not.

What if we are meant to be doing something else? What if God wants us doing something entirely different than what we are doing now? Something we will have a passion for? That begs the question, "What ARE we passionate about? What would we do instead of our current jobs that we could do with a passion for the work?"

Right now in my life I am nearing "retirement". When I think of retirement I get the stereotypical image in my head of an old couple playing golf or on vacation in some quaint European village. I think those pictures we placed in my head by some investment company commercial wanting my money.

I don't want that. I want to work after I retire. But I also want to work with a passion. I have gone to work, doing what I do, for years . . . decades! I want to do something different. Something challenging. Something to glorify my Lord. I want to have passion for what I am doing.

Are you considering a job change in the near future? Are you bored with what you are doing now? There are two questions you should ask yourself. The first is, "What am I passionate about?" And the second is the killer. "Why aren't I doing it right now?" Ouch.

So, I am making plans to do something "more productive" for God.  I am planning on leaving my job - retiring - as soon as I can. Maybe that will be in a year, a month . . . who knows. But I have a drop-dead date in mind. March of 2018. That will be my 65th birthday. If I have not left this job by then, on that day I will.

I have nothing against where I work or the people I work with. This place and these people are like family to me. But I think I am supposed to be doing something else. Something driven with a little more passion than I have right now.

So, what are the first steps to take when considering a job change? Well, step number one is to pray, of course. I have been praying about this for a year or so. Perhaps not as often and as intensely as I should have. But that's because I am "comfortable" I think. We need to be more intentional in our prayers when it comes to major life-changing things. We don't do that because we like to think we are in control of everything. We're not. Or at least we shouldn't be.

The second thing we need to do is to make a plan. Take some steps. Think about the "what-if's" and prayerfully consider each one. The important thing to remember is to faithfully keep God at the center of all things. He should be our "reason" and our "focus".

What is YOUR passion? Are you living it?

If you had to work at the job you're working at right now and not get paid for it, would you still do it? No? Then why are you still doing it?

That question eats away at me. Daily.

Find your passion. Take steps in that direction. Do it while you are young. Find that passion you have a follow it in your career. But your "following" should not be for selfish reasons like playing golf everyday when you are 65 . . . unless THAT is your passion. Ha ha ha!

Our passion should be serving God. The questions is, "How are we going to do that?" What tools has God given us to help us serve Him better?

Get passionate about examining your own gifts and abilities. But do so with God in mind. The minute we place ourselves above God in our passion, we will be doomed to failure. Seek God's will first!

Vacation

Everybody's probably seen National Lampoon's Vacation, right? If you haven't, you should. It's a classic. It's a movie about a stereotypical family on a stereotypical vacation doing stereotypical things. Probably a little far from reality but still, it hits home about all the things that can go wrong on a vacation.

My wife and I just returned from a one-week vacation to Asheville, NC. What a great trip! But there were a few things that went wrong. For example, you should have seen the look on my wife's face when she realized she had left her favorite pajamas back at the last hotel. I'm sure it matched the look on MY face when I realized the same thing about my phone charger.

Things always happen on vacations that we'd just as soon forget but as long as we can look back on them and laugh we're pretty much okay.

Another thing I have noticed about vacations is that we always look forward to taking them and we always enjoy coming back home to our comfortable beds and surroundings. I feel recharged today after my vacation . . . after returning home to MY comfy bed.

Another thing about vacations is we sometimes discover, upon our return, that we really need a different job. We never realized how much our current job is sucking the life out of us spiritually. That being said, vacations can suck the spiritual lives out of us as well. Always on the go, trying to get to somewhere else. And isn't that the problem?

Each of us has been designed for a purpose . . . a certain calling in life. Many of us miss that calling and end up doing something else to fill our time and our bank accounts. But is it what GOD wants us to be doing?

I am at the end of my career. Retirement is around the corner for me. Soon I WILL be doing something else. I look forward to that day. But I also must be cautious so my days do not become filled with things and activities that are not God-honoring. THAT, I think, is what we have been called to do - make God-honoring decisions, make God-honoring actions, in whatever we do, wherever we are. That is how we can please God and isn't that why we are here?

Each of us must answer the question, "How can I best serve God ?" no matter what we find ourselves doing. How will I answer? How will you?

"12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." = Colossians 3:12-17

U-Haul

I learned a couple of lessons this past weekend about how we tend to live life these days. About how what was once unacceptable has now become not only acceptable but common place. I was given some food for thought about our personal and our nation's work ethic. I learned ALL of this while standing in the back of a rented U-Haul truck!

My wife's parents have moved into an assisted living place near Milwaukee. She and her three sisters have been spending a lot of time cleaning their old house and getting it ready to sell. Along with the cleaning and emptying of the house there has also been a dispersing of various possessions. We were recipients of a chest freezer and a wardrobe (a tall piece of furniture). Our daughter and her husband got a nice dining room set and a dresser. The problem was, how do we gat all those items transported to their destinations, the closest being two hours away. Answer? Rent a U-Haul truck!!

As we were finishing up with the move, my wife began to sweep out the truck. It was dark outside and the truck was dimly lit so naturally I asked, "Did you get everything? They will charge us to sweep it out again if they see anything." My wife swept it out again just to make me happy while I put on a pair of gloves and brushed any microscopic dust particles off the bumper. There's NO WAY I was going to be charged extra for not cleaning our the truck! That's when I recalled this verse and began to examine myself more closely.

"23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." - Colossians 3:23-24

I began thinking of all the things that I had done in recent days, or should I say NOT done, with less zeal than I probably should have. Was I doing them "as for the Lord"? Nope. Then on Sunday our pastor spoke on the same topic . . . and used the same verse . . . Was I getting the message yet? We humans can be exceptionally dense, especially THIS one.

There are times when I am at home or at work performing a particular task that I am not really excited about doing. I might stop part way through to "take a break" and then not return to work for an hour or so. Is that working heartily as for the Lord?" I do not preform every task as if I was performing it for Jesus.

I am supposed to be building a wooden model of an old buggy for my sister. She asked me to and I agreed. Yet it has been sitting on my closet floor for weeks. As for The Lord?

This country is filled with people like me. People who don't want to work performing a task they previously agreed to do. It's all about us and our comfort, not about serving others. Why? Self satisfaction. I am my own worst enemy.

As my wife and I driving to Milwaukee the other day were discussing the welfare state that we have created in this country. We were talking about how people have been smart enough to figure out how to receive income from our country without working for it. All a woman has to do it have a few kids, the more the better, and she can make more money than she can at holding down a full-time job. I wonder what God thinks about a system like that?

"10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat." - 2 Thessalonians 3:10

We need to be taking our work more seriously. We need to be performing our tasks "as for the Lord." Anything less than that, we are only thinking about ourselves. This weekend? That buggy is going down! The fireplace I've been dinking around with for weeks? Git 'er done!!! May we ALL perform our duties, the chores we have been given, the homework, the yard work, even cleaning the litter boxes, as if we were doing them at the command of Jesus. Get the work done and get it behind us. And then grab your Bible and read Matthew 25:21.
