The Perfect Gift

Have you ever had one of those mornings when you just did NOT want to get out of bed? Every morning, right? Lol! I had one of those recently and as I lay there my mind went to a wonderful place, filled with the best gift anyone could ever receive. Love.

We humans spend a large part of our lives looking for love. It's like we were created to love and to be loved. Hmm. Perhaps that's why Jesus told us the first and greatest commandment in "To love . . ."

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” - Luke 10:27

Whether it is God or our neighbor we are commanded to love. Seems simple, yet people have a hard time doing that for some reason. Instead, we hate, we kill, we ignore, we talk trash. Satan is good at what He does. But he can't stop our desire to love and to be loved.

As a former youth leader at church I have seen many young men and women "looking for love in all the wrong places." They seem to think that having sex is the same thing as love. It's not. That's called lust and lust is a sin.

Sadly, today as I look at these same youth group kids, now adults, I see many of them with children. There are no fathers in their pictures on Facebook. The guys who said "I'll love you forever, Babe" are now with someone else. Sex does not equate with or create love. It creates children.

Here's another thing that people get wrong. Living with someone and having sex with someone without their being married FIRST. Having sex without being married is called fornication in the Bible. Here's what the Apostle Paul says about it. There are many other examples to choose from as well.

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,
nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." - 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Ouch! Did you catch the part that said "will not inherit the kingdom of God?" Yet today many of these things take place as if it's a "lifestyle," not a sin. Why? Because it is something that our culture teaches. It's rampant in our schools and universities. It is even condoned in some of our churches, even though the Word of God clearly calls it a sin.

Like I said before, Satan is very good at what he does. And if we are following Satan's plan and not God's, what does that make US?

Satan worshipers. Not God worshipers.

Let me return to my warm comfy bed where all is right with the world. Where love is pure and unconditional. And where I can pray to a God who loves, not as the world loves, but as GOD loves. It's how we were CREATED to love.

Let's not mess with God's prefect plan. We need to repent of our sins and turn / return to God. Only then can we find true love. We will find the love we always knew we wanted because we will no longer be looking for it in the wrong ways or the wrong places. True love is the perfect gift. Not because we receive it but because we first give it.

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6:8

Are you having sex outside of marriage? Are you more concerned about football than you are about worship? Do you care more about money or work than about God, family or others? Then this is your lucky day!

There is a rather ugly word in the Bible - fornication. Here is its definition.

fornication - consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other.

Here is the word used in a sentence.

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God." - 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Does that scare you? You're not alone. Verses nine and ten include a lot of people in our society today. Here's an encouraging verse to go along with these two convicting ones. Verse 11.

"And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." - 1 Corinthians 6:11

What? You mean there's hope? A way out? YES!! Here's all you have to do:

1. Go to God in prayer 
2. Seek His forgiveness.
3. Read His Word.
4. KEEP His Word.

The good news is God loves us. He wants the best for us. And by "the best" I mean He wants a marriage relationship with you! No adultery. No fornication. Purity! He wants us to have no sex outside of marriage - no relationships with idols outside of our marriage with Him. God wants to be first in our lives, not something we do on Sundays. Everyday! Every minute of every hour. God loves us! How much do we love Him?

"Drip down, O heavens, from above, And let the clouds pour down righteousness; Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit, And righteousness spring up with it. I, the LORD, have created it." - Isaiah 45:8

If you will pardon the pun, today's message is kind of a touchy subject. You see, I have this theory about touching. No, it's not the kind of touching that's been all over the news lately. That's bad. I'm writing about touching someone's heart.

My wife and I were talking the other night about this very topic. She related a story about another lady at church who had given her a hug. This lady told my wife that, when she came to the church for the first time, my wife went over and sat by her to make her feel at home. That meant a lot to this particular lady and now she and my wife hug each other every Sunday. My wife touched someone's heart.

My boss at work is a good friend. We have known each other a long time so when he developed some medical issues I got a little concerned. I went into his office and listened to him talk about his fears for his wife and family should something happen to him. I prayed for him right there, placing my arm around his shoulder. After the prayer he gave me a hug and said, "Love you, bud."

Do you see a pattern here? First there was a non-physical "embrace" of the heart - thinking about the other person's needs. Then came a physical touch - a hug - showing gratitude and thanks for what one person did for another.

The world offers a different kind of love. All these celebrities and politicians getting in trouble for their sexual misconduct. They did not follow the two steps outlined above. They failed on step one when they placed their own desires above the desires of the other person.

Jesus loves us unconditionally. When there are no conditions and no selfish, sinful thoughts in our relationships, it's easy to feel loved knowing that someone actually does love us.

Think about little children and the innocent love they show others. That's the way WE should love. The way the kids in the following passage of scripture approached Jesus is the way WE should act to everyone we meet.

"13 Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.

14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there." - Matthew 19:13-15

When We Say "I Love You"

Love can be so confusing. Any human heart can tell you that. The word 'love' itself can be has multiple meanings.

"I love my camera", "I love my best friend" and "I love my wife" all contain the word 'love' but each of those "expressions of love" contain different connotations of the word.

It is written that "God is love," but do we really understand  what that love is? Are we understanding the true meaning of the word as it relates to God? Consider this example from Ravi Zacharias.

"When I tell you that God loves you and now I tell you "I love you," it's the same word but a different connotation. When I love you and you refuse to love me, I hurt because I have lost something. When God loves you and you refuse to love God, God hurts because YOU have lost something.

Do we love like that? Is our love for others dependent upon whether or not they love us back? If it is, we are using the wrong connotation of the word . . . the wrong definition?

How do you define love? Do you love someone enough to give yourself away sexually to another person? That is NOT love. That is lust. There is no sacrifice, only selfishness. Look to God's Word for the true definition of love and just what it means to say, "I love you."

"In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." - 1 John 4:9-11

Before my father died, his children all had the opportunity to tell him we loved him. What a blessing that was! Since that day I have not been hesitant to tell other I love them. It's kind of liberating really. It is liberating because I myself am not looking to BE loved but to love. Any love received in return is simply icing on the cake and a blessing. But OH, what a blessing it is.

Tell someone you love them today. That is your challenge. Tell someone "I love you" and see what happens. You might be very surprised. But be sure to define the meaning of your words first! You could wind up in jail . . . or married! LOL!

God has blessed us with the ability to love and to be loved. Let's do that! As long as it is called today. :)

"34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34

Ladies, How Do You Know When A Man Really Loves You?

We've all seen the Facebook posts about relationships. First comes the infatuation stage - the flirtatious comments, the two-person selfies. Soon the relationship becomes "Facebook official." Sadly, the next step in many relationships these days seems to be sex, followed closely by pregnancy. Finally, the couple dissolves into a series of Facebook rants, the relationship is over and a young girl is stuck raising a child all by herself. She too often finds herself wondering, "Did he ever really love me?"

Good question. One that should be asked WAY BEFORE any physical intimacy takes place. So how DO women know if their current man in THE ONE?

Lady's, the first sign a guy loves you is NOT that he wants to have sex with you. That is simply a sign that he is thinking about himself . .  first. God wants men to think of themselves LAST. Men are supposed to sacrifice themselves for their spouses. They are not to seek their own gratification at the expense of others.

"25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her " - Ephesians 5:25

So how does a woman know when a man loves her? Here are a few signs to consider before making decisions that will effect the rest of your lives.

Patience. If a man really loves you they are willing to wait. Have you ever read the story of Jacob and Rachel? Read it. Exodus 29. Jacob loved Rachel so much we worked 14 years FOR FREE to finally receive her in marriage. How long is your man willing to wait?

Self-Sacrifice. We already read the verse from Ephesians about sacrifice. Is your man willing to die for you? He should be. Does he give you HIS coat when YOU are cold? Does he wait on you when you are sick? Would he give up watching the championship football game to go for a walk with the love of his life?

Humility. Is your potential husband proud of himself? Does he think he is God's gift to women? Then he is not for you! Any future mate should place others above himself. . . and you should be WAY up there on that list.

Godly. Is this man you are dating more in love with God than he is with you? He should be. If you can find a man like that you have truly found someone who is worthy. And if you can find such a man, who is devoted to God, he also should meet the following criteria in Galatians 5:22-23. Some of these I have mentioned already.

"22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23

Are you currently living with someone before marriage? You shouldn't be. Are you having sex before marriage? You are defiling the Holy Spirit who lives within you . . . supposedly.

"But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people." - Ephesians 5:3

The number one thing you can do to have a successful marriage and find the perfect mate for you is this. Place . . . God . . . First. In ALL things! And God will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). It is never too late to take a first step towards Christ. Jesus . . . HE is the godly man you have been seeking your entire life. No one else will come close. But try to find someone who is willing to try. Someone who is a follower of Christ. Not just in his words, but in his deeds as well.

The Commands of Jesus: Repent!

[This is the first in a series of articles about The Commands of Jesus.]

When I was in the second or third grade I went shopping with my mom downtown. I saw a shiny nail clipper in the store that came in a really neat leather pouch. So I took it home.

Later that day my mom saw me playing with it and asked me where I had gotten it. I told her. She explained to me that I had done something wrong and that we needed to take it back.

When we got back to the store, the owner loomed over me like a giant as I sheepishly gave him back his nail clipper. That store owner seemed so incredibly tall. Perhaps it was because I was feeling so incredibly low. I had no concept of sin and repentance at that time in my life. But I sure knew that I had done something wrong. To this day I have not forgotten that imposing father-figure looming over me. A good image to remember when we do things that are contrary to the will of God.

After Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness being tempted by the devil He began His teaching ministry. And what was the first thing He taught? Repentance.

"From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has come near." - Matthew 4:17

So what is repentance?

The Greeks used to word metanoia (met-an'-oy-ah) back in Jesus' day which meant a change of mind or a change in a man's heart. If Jesus felt we needed to repent, what were we doing that we needed to repent of? Well, reading the Bible can fill us in on the things we need to repent of - our sins.

So what is sin? It is anything contrary to the will of God. There are many examples of sin in the Bible. Galatians 5 has a short list.

"19  The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions   21  and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." - Galatians 5:19-21

Sexual immorality is a big one these days but it is a sin that has ALWAYS been with us. Adultery, fornication (sex outside of marriage), homosexuality, lust, even thinking impure thoughts about someone else is a sin. We must repent of these things is we are to please God.

Impurity. Have you ever heard of a purity ring. Usually girl wear these to remind themselves of a promise made not to have sex before marriage. We Christians are to remain pure as well and not have any other gods besides the One True God. More on that later.

Debauchery (excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures) is usually associated with  sex but it could also be a form of gluttony if we get a sensual desire about the food we eat. Put down the Twinkies and repent!

Idolatry is a MAJOR sin we all are good at. Some people are obsessed with sports, some people love their cars or their job. They spend so much time talking about these things that they often forget about God. NOT good. Repent!

I don't know too many people who are witches but they DO exist. Before you shrug this sin off and think you're pretty safe, think about it. Have you ever used a Ouiga board? Calling on spirits is a form witchcraft. Repent!

Hatred, jealousy, fits of rage, envy - all these are against God's will for our lives. We need to repent of these things whenever they happen to us.

Drunkenness. This is a big one in the state of Wisconsin or on any college campus for that matter. Drinking to excess is against God's will. Drinking, in moderation, is acceptable. But drinking too much is not. A friend of mine lost his daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. Hmm. Drunkenness AND murder. That guy is going straight to hell! Unless, of course, the driver knew Jesus . . . which I doubt. If He truly knew Jesus he wouldn't have been drinking to excess.

Our lives are full of opportunities to sin. I can't make it through the day without stumbling in some way. We should repent of our sins on a daily basis. Repent on an "as they happen" basis. The important thing is that we seek forgiveness from God. We are God's children. We should act like it.

Well. That was certainly disgusting. I wasn't really expecting what I saw on television that night. Maybe that's why it made such an impact on me. It made such an impression in fact that it moved me to do something I rarely, if ever, do.

My wife and I were sitting in the living room Thursday night eating our dinner. The TV was on. My wife likes to watch the evening news. I like to eat her cooking. Seemed like a perfect time for both of us. Appearances can be deceiving.

If was about 6:00. Like I said, we were watching the evening news. Truth be told, I was probably more focused on my plate than I was on anything else. I randomly looked up at the television after taking a bite of food and saw a scantily-clad woman, "dressed" in a black leather thong, thrusting and rubbing herself rather sexually on a car.

"Umm, what are we watching?" I asked my wife.

"Oh, that's a Hardee's commercial," she replied, indicating by her words that she had seen it before.

Sure enough. The woman was now taking a rather large bite out of a big, juicy, dripping burger.

"Seriously?"

Suddenly another woman appeared on the scene. Paris Hilton I think. She told the other woman that she had "missed some" and she then proceeded to lick some cheese off the car's hood.

"Are you sure this is an ad? I thought most people pay for this stuff."

It was incredibly pornographic in my opinion. It was SO pornographic that it prompted me to take some action. I e-mailed both Hardee's and the local news channel, who somewhere, somehow came to the conclusion that this was somehow appropriate for family viewing during the dinner hour, and I let them have it - in a wonderfully Christian way, of course.

I simply told them that they should let me know when they pull the explicit ad so I could resume watching their network / eating their food. It's been four days now. No response.

This past Saturday, I went for one of my long walks in the woods. As I walked I listened to several books from the audio Bible I carry on my iPod. One of them was to Book of Ephesians. Hearing God's words reminded me of a few things.

If you have your Bible handy, please open it to the second chapter. Paul is writing to the church in Ephesus - a political, educational and cultural center. It could very well be that the influence of the culture on that local church caused it to stray from the early teachings of Priscilla and Aquila. Let's see what Paul says. We read.

"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience -  3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind." - Ephesians 2:1-3

The things I take out of this text are these:

1. We were, or are, all living a sinful lifestyle at some point in our lives but we were called out of that lifestyle through our faith in Jesus Christ (verse 1).
2. We tend to follow our culture. What's "hot", the latest trends and fads (verse 2)
3. Satan - "the prince of the power of the air" - is at work in us and in the world we live in (verse 2).
4. We used to live in the passions of our flesh. "If it feels good, do it!" Maybe we STILL do (verse 3).
5. We were no different than anyone else on this sinful planet. Destined to suffer the wrath of God, just like everyone else (verse 3).

There was a time when I would have gladly watched that Hardee's commercial . . . without my wife in the room of course. I would have allowed my mind to wander off in whatever direction it wanted to go, as long as it pleased me.

So what has changed? Why am I now different than the rest of the world? Why has a commercial like that suddenly become so repulsive? What happened? I was so happy, or so I thought, in the lifestyle I was living. What changed? Let's continue our reading.

"4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved -  6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." - Ephesians 2:4-9

As I read those words of Paul's and then I also recall his words to the Romans about how we are no longer to conform to the pattern of this world (Romans 12:2) I feel convicted. Why? Because I know that I have not totally left "this world" behind. I still have one foot firmly planted in it, in sin. We ALL do!

So what do we do about it? How do we get rid of some of the sin in our lives? Ask yourself this question, as I did a few weeks ago. What is something I am doing right now that I could give up and replace with reading the Bible, or volunteering to serve others someplace? What could I do, right this very minute, that would honor God above all the other thing I am doing?

Could I turn of the computer a little earlier? The same for the television. Could I chose not to watch TV shows (or commercials) that do not honor the God we serve? Of course! Movies in theaters. How many went to see Noah or Heavens For Real instead of learning more about God? There was little biblical truth in either of those movies yet thousands flocked to see them.

We must think through everything we are about to do and ask ourselves this question. Will this honor God? If no, we should reconsider what we are about to do. If yes, the by all means proceed. We serve a great God, not some two-bit fallen angle on an ego trip. Stand tall, in the name of Jesus, and flee from Satan. God will be glad you did. It is His will that we are to follow, not ours. Celebrate your God-honoring decisions and choices. You are growing closer to God when you make them. And that's a GOOD thing! :)

Are The Two Wills In God? - A Sermon by Matt Chandler

This past week the United States Supreme Court handed down two rulings affecting the status of gay marriage in this country. I don't know what was more sad. The news of the rulings or the cover on The New Yorker magazine this past week of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie, cuddling on the couch.

What is going on in this country? What is happening to us as a society that we embrace what once was unheard of? That is actually a very easy question to answer. We're removing God from our schools, our government and . . . our lives.

There are many sins I could write about here - drunkenness, gambling, drug and alcohol addiction, pornography, adultery. They're all pretty much the same. They basically the things we do when we forget about God and elevate ourselves above Him . . . and that is ANOTHER sin.
 

It is quite clear in God's word what is acceptable in His eyes and what is not - sex-wise. Sex outside of marriage is a sin and so is same-sex sex. There are plenty of passages in the Bible speaking about it. The typical verses used by those against gay marriage and homosexuality are usually Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 where God calls such acts "an abomination."

 

Those "Christians" who support the gay and lesbian lifestyle, or at least feel they should be allowed to practise what ever kind of sex we want, say that the Old Testament God and all of its rules no longer apply to us because of the New Covenant, the New Testament and Jesus. For those who believe that, I have some verses for you . . . from the New Testament.
 

"8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." - Hebrews 13:8

 

And this from the Book of John - "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word (Jesus) was with God, and the Word (Jesus) was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." - John 1:1-5

 

Jesus has always been around and His Word, from beginning to end, has always been true. So much for excluding the Old Testament. These words are from Jesus. The One who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

 

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." - Matthew 5:17

 

God loves marriage. God loves relationships - healthy, monogamous relationships. But he does NOT love same sex relationships. He hates them. Yes, God hates. And He is a jealous God, not wanting that any should perish. Read this from the book of Romans and see if it sounds like what is happening in our world today.

 

"21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

 

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

 

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error." - Romans 1:21-27

 

That pretty much sums up how God feels about this topic and, as followers of Christ, it is also how WE should feel about it. So what do we do, as Christians, when we encounter friends and family in same-sex relationships in our lives? Jesus is pretty clear on that front too.

 

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” - John 13:34-35

 

Some would say, "See? We're supposed to love one another, whether we're male or female! Yes, that is true but the word "love" from this text is "agapate" (unconditional love) in Greek, not "eros" - meaning sexual love as in marriage. We should love everybody! Just not sexually. Sexual love is only to be between a husband and a wife . . . of the opposite sex.

 

Here's some questions for you this morning . . . Can there be gay and lesbian Christians? Can there be murders who are Christian? The thief on the cross next to Jesus. He was a murderer and HE went to heaven. What about him!?

 

Well, he repented of his sins. But when we as a society CONDONE and ACCEPT sin rather thaan repent of it, what then? If we continue to live in sin, no matter what the sin is, are we truly Christians? Are we truly following Jesus?

 

"15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."" - John 14:15

 

So what do we do? First, we as a nation need to get on our knees and seek God's forgiveness. But that will never happen. At least not before Jesus returns. Then, we need to take a stand for God's Word in our churches. That won't happen either, at least not in ALL the churches. Many of our brothers and sisters are too busy worshipping man rather than God.

 

Some may call me a hater for speaking out on this issue. Nope. I am a Christian . .  a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus told his followers to love everyone . . . agape love. Would you call Jesus a "hater"? I don't think so. Today, I am just speaking out against sin, and the path this nation and this world are walking on. Homosexuality just happened to be in the news this week.

 

The path this world is on does not lead to heaven. The path we need to be walking on leads to Jesus. But it is a path that is increasingly hard to find these days and in this world it is extremely narrow.

 

"13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." - Matthew 7:13

 

We are all sinners. None of us deserves to be called sons and daughters of The Most High God. We must REPENT of our sins and make JESUS Lord or our lives, not ourselves. May we always seek the narrow gate, the path that leads to Jesus. May we follow Him wherever He may go, no matter what the cost, for He is The Way, The Truth and The Life (John 14:6)
