The Woods

It's amazing how, when our eyes are opened, we begin seeing things from an entirely new and different viewpoint. Take The Wizard of Oz for example.

"You're out of the woods. You're out of the dark. You're out of the night. Step into the sun. Step into the light."

The latest film to be hyped by 'Hollyweird' is named Wicked. That should tell you everything you need to know about the movie right there. The film had a $150 million budget and, as of this writing, has taken in $634.4 million. Universal Studios must be happy.

So, why should we be concerned about such a clearly popular movie? What's the big deal?

“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.” - Deuteronomy 18:9-12

Well, that seems clear to me. Witchcraft is NOT good. So, why do we promoted it so much in Hollywood and in our families?

Think about all the dark TV shows and movies there are. The Wizard of Oz, Bewitched, The Harry Potter series of movies, Narnia movies, Lord of The Rings movies, Charmed, Malificent, Into The Woods, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Blair Witch Project, The Witches of Eastwick, even Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. There ARE more. And this list doesn't even include all of the Halloween movies. My point is this ....

Why would we do something that The Lord clearly hates? Either we are unaware or we are apathetic about such things.

God's punishment for involvement with such things is death. Just sayin' ....

"You shall not permit a sorceress to live." - Exodus 22:18 

"A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.” - Leviticus 20:27

We have grown far to accustomed to witchcraft in our society today, in my opinion. It's almost been normalized. Time to make a change.

When we come to faith in Jesus Christ, we literally step out of darkness and into the light. To use the Wizard of Oz line from my opening paragraphs . . . 

You're out of the woods. You're out of the dark. You're out of the night. Step into The Son. Step into The Light."

The Witch of Endor

If you are a fan of Star Wars or Lord of The Rings, you have probably heard of Endor. For Tolkien, Endor was also known as Middle Earth. For George Lucas, Endor was a planet inhabited by Ewoks. But did you know that Endor is actually a real place in The Bible? And a witch lived there.

"Then Saul said to his servants, "Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "Behold, there is a medium at Endor." - 1 Samuel 28:7

Consulting mediums, spiritists, witches or sorcerers was against God's will.

“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the Lord your God." - Leviticus 19:31

So, why was Saul consulting with a medium if it was against God's will? Good question!

Saul was desperate for some guidance. God had stopped answering him because Saul had sinned. Repeatedly. Saul then remembered the prophet Samuel. Samuel was someone who had guided him in the past. Why not summon him from the dead, right?

The Bible contains many commands from God that we ourselves choose to ignore. We think they are ridiculous so WE DECIDE to disobey. Do you think that's wise?

One thing to remember about witches and the like - they are sinners just like you and me. We all face an eternity in hell unless we repent of our sins and turn to God in humble submission.

One more thing about The Witch of Endor. She knew that her 'occupation,' and what she did, was against both the king's command AND God's law. Yet, she did it anyway.

One might say, "I am no different than her." But we ARE different - if we have placed our hope and faith in Jesus.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." - John 3:16-18
