Endings

I finished reading the book of Nehemiah this week, and each time I get to the end of it, I am always struck by the last words.

"Remember me with favor, my God." - Nehemiah 13:31

Focus on those words for a bit. What a beautiful way to end a prayer. Or a life.

Speaking of endings, March 28th is a day that I will never forget. It's my birthday. Every time I go to the doctor, they always ask what my date of birth is. They are using my birthday as a test, just to make sure "I am who I am."

But the reason March 28th is a day that I will never forget is because it is also the date on which my niece chose to end her life.

Each year, on or about my birthday, I go downstairs to my office and pull out the stack of letters that my neice sent me. She was new to her faith in Jesus and had many questions which I was more than happy to help her with. This was her favorite verse.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

Ironic . . .

Her favorite musical artist was Phil Wickham. She was quite jealous when she learned I had seen him in concert. She and I were planning a trip to see him before . . . well, before things ended. Again, speaking of endings, the thing she always wrote at the end of her letters is the same thing I often use in my correspondence with others to this day - "love you and miss you."

And that I do. That I do.

Here's a question: How can your niece be your sister?

When you both have Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. 

Love you and miss you, my sister.

Either Way

"Suffering purifies what we really believe about God." - Janet Parshall

Pain and Suffering are great teachers. And life-lessons often get taught in the most painful situations.

As I was driving home from the dentist (Speaking of pain! Lol!) I turned on the radio and listened to a talk show about dealing with grief. The guest was the author of a book entitled Either Way, We'll Be All Right.

The book was a "diary" about the author and his wife as they processed her cancer diagnosis and ultimate death.

What I found most refreshing was the way that this couple's faith was interwoven with every thought and decision they made along the way about a seemingly unknown future.

The amazing thing about Christianity, and an active faith in the heart of the true believer, is that "the future" is already known and embraced.

'Death is a part of life' they say, but it is often a sad part. Remember Lazarus? Remember all of the mourners and Lazarus's two sisters? Even Jesus wept upon seeing their pain.

"When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” He asked." - John 11:32-34

Jesus knew that Lazarus would live again. And so it will be with ALL who believe. But Jesus was filled with compassion and mercy for those who were grieving.

The real key in dealing with pain and suffering is Jesus. He has already removed the 'pain and suffering' from our future by dying for our sins on the cross. He can also ease our present woes by taking their weight off our shoulders.

To ease our present burdens, we must pray. But that is only step one. The second thing required of us is to trust. Without our trusting in Jesus, what good are our prayers?

"Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” He said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down." - Matthew 14:25-32

Peter's doubt caused him to sink. Jesus said his sinking was due to Peter's lack of faith.

Are we totally and completely trusting in Jesus with our fear and pain and prayers? Or are we sinking?

Peter THOUGHT he believed but later he denied Jesus three times to protect his own life. Do we truly believe? Even when things don't go as we had hoped?

Either way, we must trust in God.

"Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves." - 2 Corinthians 13:5

Blind Eyes

I had cataract surgery a few days ago. Basically, they cut into your eye, remove the original lens, and replace it with a new one. Sounds simple, right?

Wrong.

This was like REAL surgery! Lol! Hospital gown, IV in my wrist, anesthesiologist, operating room, the whole thing.

The actual procedure took five-ten minutes, but the prep time took an hour. My surgeon had 17 such surgeries Thursday morning. Then he met with each of us patients that same afternoon to see how we were doing.

So, is my vision all clear this morning? Nope. I can see but my vision is still a bit cloudy. That's normal I guess but I was hoping for some kind instantaneous restoration. Again . . . nope.

It reminds me of Jesus and His healing of the man born blind.

"He (Jesus) took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly." - Mark 8:23-25

The interesting thing about the account we just read was that Jesus healed the man in two stages. With other similar healings of blindness in the Bible people could see immediately. So, why wasn't this man's healing the same?

It doesn't really say, but there is a hint a few verses earlier when read that it was "some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him." The blind man himself did not ask to be healed.

Perhaps by being partially healed at first the blind man himself then had faith in Jesus. He certainly had no hope before, but now he actually could see, although not clearly. But now the man himself believed in the healing power that Jesus had. And that's what Jesus was waiting for.

Elsewhere in the Bible we read of many other such healings of the blind and lame and we hear this from Jesus:

"Your faith has healed you."

The blind man was brought to Jesus because of THEIR faith, not his. Total restoration (the second time) was a result of the blind man's faith, not theirs.

I believe my eye surgeon when he says that the cloudiness in my eye will disappear in a few days. His testimony is based on thousands of other such surgeries that he has performed.

But my ultimate faith is in Jesus. My faith in Jesus is based on the total restorative surgery that He has already performed on my heart. Only through Him was I made able to clearly see.

The Obedient Servant

"You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe - and tremble!" - James 2:19

We can say we believe in God, but as James points out, 'even the demons believe.' So what makes us any different than them?

I believe it is our desire to be obedient servants to Him and follow His commands. That is not the desire of demons, although demons and unclean spirits ultimately do submit to God's authority.

The real question for the believer is not 'do you believe' but, do we obey God's commands? You can get the idea when Jesus asked this question:

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?" - Luke 6:46

If we claim to be followers of Christ, shouldn't we be keeping His commands?

As an example, God, in His Ten Commandments, said, "Thou shalt not kill." Numerous times God also exclaims in the Old Testament that He hates the shedding of innocent blood. Yet many Christians are pro-choice when it comes to aborting a human life in the womb. Are they truly Christians then? Are they obedient to God's commands?

We MUST be obedient! Otherwise we cannot claim to be disciples - followers of Christ.

There is a Greek word that appears in the Bible - 'dulous'. It means slave. Here is the word in a sentence.

"Well done, good and faithful 'dulous.'"- Matthew 25:23

Are we slaves of Jesus? Are we slaves of the One True God?

We should be.

Defining Jesus

It is one of the most important questions any of us can ever answer. "Who do YOU say that I am?" How we reconcile Jesus is so incredibly important to our eternity. Who exactly is He? And most importantly, who do WE believe that He is?

Jesus posed two questions to His disciples concerning His identity. It's important to note the differences. Here they are:

"And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” - Mark 8:27-29

The first question is kind of odd really. "Who do people say that I am?" Jesus already knew the answer to this question, but He wanted to hear the answer from His disciples. The second question though is the most important. "Who do YOU say that I am?"

I think Jesus emphasized the word YOU when He asked that question.

People had various opinions about who Jesus was. A prophet, a demon-possessed man, Elijah, the carpenter's son, John The Baptists, etc.

Even today there are different ideas concerning Jesus. The Mormon faith for example teaches that Jesus was actually Adam's son, born into this world. The Christian faith says that Jesus is fully God and always existed. There are two different versions of Jesus being worshipped here. Which one is right?

The Jewish people believe Jesus was just a man, not the Son of God. Islam teaches pretty much the same thing - a human, a prophet.

That brings us back to Jesus' second question. Who do YOU say that I am?

If we think that Jesus was simply human, a prophet perhaps, Jesus will have an eternal home prepared just for us. If we think that Jesus is The Christ, The Son of the Living God, Jesus will offer us a different eternity.

So, who do YOU say that Jesus is?

The Mechanic

We all go through life, each of us living our lives, day in and day out. Then, one day, something happens that reshapes everything. 'Life-changing' is what people call it.

I was recently reminded of that fact yesterday at the dentist. I finished my appointment and went out to my car to head home. However, when I turned the key in the ignition nothing happened. My car's starter had failed. I had no hope of going anywhere.

What should I do? Who should I call? Where do I turn for help?

Isn't that kind of like us facing our eternity without Jesus Christ? Without Him we'll just be sitting in life's parking lot, waiting for assistance but no one will be coming. Unless we have God's "extended warranty" working for us. You signed up for that, didn't you? Lol!

In my case, I knew to call a tow company. It was a good idea to get my car taken someplace that could actually fix my car's problems - a mechanic.

Jesus is 'The Great Mechanic' in each of our lives. He knows exactly what's wrong with our hearts and how to fix them and take care of all of our worries. And His service is totally free! Jesus already paid the bill for us on the cross.

When we get broken down in life we need to remember that help is just a prayer away. A humble repentant prayer because the only prayer God will listen to is from His children. And THAT is the extended warrantee right there.

"For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you." - Romans 8:6-11

Describing God To A Kid

Here's a challenge for you. Describe God to a kid. What would you tell them? Ready? Go!

God made everybody and everything. He made you and me and everybody! He made the sun, the moon, and the stars. He even made the whole earth! God made the air that we breathe,

God is like your mom and your dad, all rolled into one. A giant super parent that you can't see!

He makes the food that we eat and the clothes that we wear. He protects us and teaches us things. But He will also punish us when we do bad things.

God loves us very much. SO much that He did something amazing for us. God lives in heaven and He has invited us to come live with Him. The only problem is that we can et into heaven unless we have done nothing wrong. Have you ever done anything wrong?

Well, don't worry. Remember, God loves you! He made a way for us to get into heaven, even though we have done bad things. His Son Jesus made it okay for us to get into heaven, even though we don't deserve it. How cool is that?!?

I guess it all comes down to the fact that God loves you. He wants the best for you, but He also wants the best FROM you. Does that make sense? He wants you to behave and if you do He will reward you!

Oh! I almost forgot! If you get sick and die, don't worry. God can bring people back to life! I know!! Unbelievable, but it's true. And all we have to do is believe in Him. He kind of like Santa Claus but His gifts are way cooler!

Beliefs

We all have things we believe to be true. Social media is filled with people stating their particular belief system - often opposing another's beliefs. So who is right? Is anybody?

What we believe to be true comes from deep within us. That's why we get so defensive when someone opposes our beliefs.

Some people think burning the American flag is wrong. Some believe it is a freedom of speech to burn it. Who is right?

The wearing of masks is another hot button issue these days. Some say we should wear them all the time while others say we should not wear them at all. Who's right?

We form our individual belief systems as we grow up. It's kind of like grocery shopping. We start out with an empty shopping cart and we walking down the aisle of ideas and start filling it up with things we believe in.

In this age of Covid-19, contact tracing is a big thing. Trying to go back in time to trace where someone may have caught the virus, and looking sideways to see who you may have given it to.

If we take each of our beliefs and contact trace them back to their origin, where do our beliefs come from?

In the case of wearing masks perhaps it is the CDC or the government that is at the root of our beliefs. We trust them. On the other side of the coin perhaps it is an individual freedom issue or a belief that most masks don't keep you from catching the virus. It's what we believe.

Where does our belief in God come from?  The Bible says we are drawn to Him. It also says we are called by God. Some people say we have no choice in the matter of our faith. That's called predestination. Others say we must choose to follow God, a free will stance.

We humans sure like to complicate things.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6

Jesus has said that HE is the truth. Is that even possible? He also says that we must believe in Him or face certain death. And if we believe in Jesus we will receive eternal life. Is that the truth or a bribe?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

The contact tracing of our faith takes us back to the Bible. That is where God speaks to us. It says in the Bible that God cannot lie. Lying is a sin (9th Commandment). God cannot sin. Therefore, everything God says is true. "The truth" is an amazing place to start a belief system.

We had a discussion this week about baptism - infant baptism vs believer's baptism. Which is right? The answer is neither. Baptism of the Holy Spirit is what matters. How can I say that? How do I know that is true?

"I (John the Baptist) baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one (Jesus) who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." - Matthew 3:11

We MUST base our belief system in the truth. Otherwise we will be living a lie. We must be sure we are standing in the truth. Then we must stand firm. Jesus IS "The Truth" and the Truth (Jesus) will set us free. You can believe THAT!

"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming." - Ephesians 4:14

This young man just witnessed something we rarely get to see these days - a miracle of God. And what was his response? Well, he fell down on his knees and worshipped. What will WE do when we encounter the one true God face-to-face?

That's a hard question to answer I guess. It all really depends on what He means to us when we meet Him.

There are many of us believe in Him right now without having actually seen Him. We have only heard about Him. Yet somehow we have been drawn to Him. It is the Holy Spirit calling us. Still, many will not believe in Him even though they have heard all about Him their whole lives. Remember Thomas? DOUBTING Thomas?

"Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” - John 20:24-29

If you believe, you are blessed. That should help you get your Monday off to a pretty good start. YOU! You have been blessed by God!

The Invisible Killer

Everything looks normal. They can't tell there's anything wrong. Things look perfectly harmless in their eyes. They think they are safe yet, the next thing you know they end up dead. Game over. Lights out. No second chance at all. Gone.

That happens all too often at our house. A birds sees the reflection of the nearby trees and mistakes them for REAL trees and BOOM! They either die on impact or are left staggering around on the ground; knocked silly by the hardness of the glass.

There was a recent case of nearly 400 birds flying into an office building in San Antonio. Wildlife experts said that the birds were most likely confused by there surrounding. Some rain, heavy winds, and the lights from the building all combined to create a deadly scenario - deceiving the birds and ultimately leading to their deaths.

Things can be much the same for us in this confusing world. We can get distracted and confused. We can even think we are on the right track when suddenly we are hit right between the eyes by something that knocks us for a loop.

Perhaps it's a death in the family, an illness or the breakup of a relationship. We become hit so hard that we don't know what to do anymore. We then try to gather our wits about us and pick up the broken pieces. What to do? What to do?

Have we considered Jesus? Have we turned to Him in our hour of need? Usually we try to do things on our own. Well, that's the first of our problems.

"There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." - Proverbs 14:12

Birds have no understanding about the dangers of flying into windows. They see trees, familiar things to them, and the try to fly through them. We are no different. We try to fly through life without God, never considering the consequences of doing so. That is, until it's too late.

The way that "seems right to a man" is this world we live in. Have fun, get ahead, look out for #1, just do it, everybody else is doing it so why not, if it feels good - do it. That's what the world tells us. If we follow that path we will run head long into an impenetrable barrier. Death.

Chose life! Chose Christ! Ask Jesus to show you the way you should go. He will!

"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6

Did you get that? Jesus is the only "window" that leads to life. All others lead to death. Let that sink in, then close life. Please.

The Stories

This past weekend I traveled to Michigan to see my Uncle Bob and Aunt Kathy who came all the way from Oregon to visit my mom. What an incredible few days of stories and old pictures! Laughs were plentiful. Sad moments too. But the thing I will remember the most are the stories.

Most of the stories were from before I was born. Like the time my uncles got my mom some underwear for Christmas. Rather than wrap her "unmentionables" in a box or bag they chose to display them . . . on the Christmas tree. Boys! (Why didn't I think of doing that with MY sister!)

The stories seemed to be endless and told with such emotion. Do we tell stories like that with OUR families?

You know, we sit in church and listen to old stories out of the Bible. Rarely are they told with the emotion and vigor the stories I heard this past weekend were. Why is that? Where has the fire gone? Where have the Biblical stories gone that we should be telling our children?

One of the reasons for our lack of enthusiasm is that all of the Bible stories are at least 2,000 years old. They are no longer just one or two generations removed from our own. The stories of my parent's generation are somewhat real to me because I actually KNOW some of the people in them. But my children cannot relate to them because they don't have that personal connection.

Why don't we tell Bible stories with passion and excitement? I think it's because we are generations removed from them. It's becuase they didn't happen to us or someone we know.

But each of us has our own present day story to tell of how God touched our lives. I do. It's called our testimony. Stories of how God touches our lives are everywhere and we should tell them with unbridled enthusiasm. Why? Because they happened to us and God wrote them.

Do YOU have a story to tell about how God changed YOUR life? Tell it! Work it into the conversations you have about God. Let people see your emotions and just how dramatically God has changed your life. The word of our testimony is a powerful thing. No 0ne can refute it or argue against it. It is a story of redemption and love. Those two things are something the world needs lots of today. So let's tell it! :)

What Is Real?

Things are not always as they seem. Our minds can be easily manipulated. We can think one thing is true when, in reality, it's the exact opposite. Knowing what the truth is is incredibly important. Our whole system of laws is based on it.

"Do you promise the tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"

Hmm, I wonder if they still use that last part . . .

You've probably seen the following video. It's a girl with blue hair. Or is it pink? Or purple?

What is her real hair color? How do you know?

Do you have a favorite newscast you like to watch? Are they factual? How do you know? Do you think ABC News is truthful? NBC? CBS? Fox News? What about the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation)?

They recently reported about the declining reindeer herd population in Russia. They said it was due to global warming. That sounds right. We've all heard about global warming, right? So it must be true. Well . . .

The BBC has admitted to making a factual error in their reporting of the story. You can read about it here. It turns out that the majority of reindeer herds in Russia are actually increasing in number. They are either increasing or they are remaining stable. None are decreasing. How could they make such a mistake? That's easy. They have an agenda. They are looking at the world with "global warming" eyes.

Their agenda is more important to them than the facts.

We all have own set of values that we filter our "truth" through. Whether it is actually truthful or not is anybody's guess. So, what is real? What IS the truth?

^"5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

⁶ Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ⁷ If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” - John 14:5-6

This is an amazing statement by Jesus. In it he says that all other religions are false because HIS way is the only way. He also says He is the truth. God can never lie. That's a sin and God cannot sin. The really amazing part of the scripture we just read is when Jesus said "from now on you do know Him . . . and have seen Him.

Jesus just told His disciples that He, Jesus, is God. Wow. And God doesn't lie. It's against His nature. He is holy.

So, when we go searching for what the truth is, let us begin with God and His Word. It contains all the truth we will ever need.

What Is Truth? - The Passion of The Christ

Open Your Eyes

Okay. Are you ready for a vision test. Take a look at this picture and tell me what you see. The face of Jesus is to most obvious thing but take a closer look. Do you see people standing off to the left? To the right? Probably. But do you see Jesus riding on a donkey? Do you see the stone arch in the background creating a halo over the head of Jesus? Or is His hair actually the inside of the arch that the people are standing in?

In the Book of Mark, Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah saying, "‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” - Isaiah 6:9, Mark 4:12

We tend to see things based on our own personal experiences and through the lens of the things we have learned.

Currently we have several people running for the office of President of The United States. They all have eyes and they all can see but each of them sees things differently. The same can be said of our churches. That's why there are so many different denominations.

Everybody has heard of Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective. Sherlock gives us another example similar to Isaiah 6 from the book A Scandal in Bohemia. Speaking to Watson, Holmes says,

“You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear. For example, you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room.”

 “Frequently.”

 “How often?”

 “Well, some hundreds of times.”

 “Then how many are there?”

 “How many? I don't know.”

 “Quite so! You have not observed. And yet you have seen. That is just my point. Now, I know that there are seventeen steps, because I have both seen and observed.”

The other day my wife and I were at our grandson's birthday party. He's four years old already! We were preparing to pray before our meal that day and his mother said to him, "It's time to pray. Fold your hands."

He folded his hands, closed his eyes and bowed his head. One could easily see an obedient child but his actions also demonstrated a child who has been trained in the ways of The Lord. No one told him to bow his head or to close his eyes but someone clearly had told him to do that in the past. We can observe things about people simply by watching them.

I once asked someone at work how they were doing. "Fine," they said. But I observed in this persons eyes a different story so I asked again. That's when the tears began to flow. We then prayed together and now we are amazingly close friends, simply by observing . . . and acting.

As we live our lives, people will be watching US. What do THEY preserve about us? Will they think we are educated? Will they think we are nice? Caring" Giving? Will they think we are Christians simply by watching us?

Anybody can walk into a church. That's where Christians hang out, right? Wrong. Christians don't just simply go to church, they LIVE their faith. They are taught by their parents, they read God's Word and they live it out.

Our pastor delivered an amazing closing line to his sermon on Sunday. He asked us a question.

Knowing that God can see into our hearts . . . what will He see in yours?

Ouch.

May we live our lives as Jesus would. Always seeing AND preserving. May we take the time to look behind the fake smiles and into the hearts of those around us. There is hurting everywhere. And we hold The First Aid Kit in our hearts - Jesus. Let us reach out in love to those who are only seeing and not yet perceiving.
